Botox Anyone??

I went to my first Botox party last wednesday with Lianne. Now, I am not old enough to reap the benefits from Botox, but it was entertaining to watch. The women were so happy to go back to see the doctor and get all of their wrinkles (well not all, but a good bit of them) erased. I have never seen anyone so anxious to get poked and prodded. I can say that the Doctor (Dr. Ruff) and the nurse were quite knowledgeable about procedure, and I must say that I was very tempted to be next. It was a pleasant experience and it feels good that there is a procedure out there that allows women to feel good about maturing. Not everyone is blessed with a superior gene pool and access to expensive skin care...and no one is immune to wrinkles and crow's feet.

After a couple of months with my beloved Bobbi Brown mini brush set, I decided to give her a rest. I needed a set that had more brushes and a larger carrying case. So, after poking around in Blue Mercury, I immediately fell in love with the Trish McEvoy Essential Brush Collection. I had to have it, and the smile on my face as I walked out of the store with new brush set in hand was really worth 1000 words. If you would have passed me on the street, you would have wondered "what's she so happy about?"

The brush comes with Deluxe Blending Brush, Deluxe Tapered Blending brush, Deluxe eye contour, Deluxe Eye Definition Duo, Deluxe Eye Definition Duo, Deluxe Even Skin Correct & Blend Duo and Deluxe Lip. From the Runways to the Streets

I know I maybe early on this one (not in the fashion world..but in real life), but I had a photo shoot in NY on Sunday for a magazine submission for the Big September fall issue (late I know). The looks were all inspired by German Expressionism painters, like Munch, Schiele, and Dix. I decided to go with a completely black, glossy lip (done with black eyeliner and clear gloss). Now you maybe wondering, who on earth would wear black lipstick (I've seen it done....don't act like you didn't wear black lipliner in the 90s)?? Well fortunately for you, Giorgio Armani has made it easy with his new Caffe Collection. The collection consist of 5 luxuriously, rich, and creamy lipsticks. Shade 62 is a great wearable interpretation of the black lip trend. Be sure to pair it with the accompanying liner to get a perfectly defined lip that is necessary when wearing such rich shades. It is a beautiful, rich brown that just screams fall and winter. The packaging is extremely chic and sophisticated. I am definitely gifting this to myself!!! I can't wait!!! Fall is among us!!

To Powder or Not to Powder??

I only powder my face once a day. That's it!! After I apply my concealer, I apply powder on top to set it. That's it!! I don't apply it all over my face nor do I apply it on my nose. I don't like the matte look. Semi-matte. Sometimes. Matte....Never. When will women realize that matte skin does not look healthy nor does it look real.

I think many women hate having oily skin, so they powder themselves constantly throughout the day. They don't realize that powder DOES NOT control oil. I repeat..POWDER DOES NOT CONTROL OIL PRODUCTION!! There is no product out on the market that truly prevents sebum production. Now, there are products that TEMPORARILY do so like oil-control lotions, but it is TEMPORARY...like 2 hours temporary. Please ladies, let go of the constant reapplication of blot powder, loose powder, and studio fix and invest in oil absorbing sheets. please.....

Most celebrities that we see on TV and in magazines have been retouched and are being maintained by their makeup artist. Oil production is a natural function of your skin.

One more thing....if you have skin that isn't flawless (who does...but you know what I mean), don't look for a powder to do the job. That's like asking someone who is a size 12 to fit into a 2. It ain't gonna happen. There are claims of products giving full coverage, but do you really want full coverage from a powder?? Really?? Just imagine what that would look like....

I don't even like to use powder highlighters, unless it is just 200 degrees outside and the person's skin is like an oil slick.

This isn't to give powder a bad rep, but to those who really just sit and apply it all over ....stop it!!

To powder or not to powder....? NOT!!!

Weekend at the Beach

I just got back from a wedding this weekend at Virginia Beach. It was a lovely event. Is it me or do people not dress up for weddings anymore? They used to be such glamorous event, even for those in attendance. The wedding day is not only for the bride. It's a day that you can look your best too!! I just wanted to let you gals know what I wore ( I got sooo many compliments on my look):

I got up and went to the beach this morning. Now, I am already a chocolatey girl, but I laid out in the sun(i even got a tan....I look so Chic and Coco Chanel...lol), made sandcastles, and played in the water with my younger cousins. It was such a nice get away!! I haven't been to the beach in years....was great to be a kid again!!

Keeping Cool and Pretty in 100 degree weather

As we know, HEAT + HUMIDITY = MELTING FACE

But to stay cool during these unbearably hot times, I decided to pick up some items from Douglas yesterday while out on a mini shopping trip. Here are my recommendations for keeping cool, but cute during such humid times,

1.Instead of trying to rock a face that you have taken 30 minutes to beat on the floor (for it to only melt onto the floor once you step outside), try playing up your nails. I love Essie Neon Collection. 4 mini cute neon nail colors (magenta, lemon yellow, orange, and hot pink). These can hold up under all kinds of conditions, including sweaty feet. Got these yesterday, and I am rocking Short Shorts(the bright pink) with matching lips.

2.Evian Facial Spray Traveling Companions. I picked these little cuties up yesterday to cool me down. You get 3-1.70z (about 50ml) bottles. They fit perfectly in the purse or the makeup bag. Nice to cool you down without ruining your makeup. This will give you a fresh-faced look, while improving your skin's hydration level. Even the BF loves these. We were spraying each other for the remainder of the day. Keep them in the fridge to get a cool burst of h20.

3.Burt's Bees Deep Cleansing Cream. I love this stuff. This is perfect for the oily gal and the gal with dry skin. really!! It contains chamomile, which helps to soothe the skin. Not to mention that it contains menthol, which gives a nice cooling sensation. I like to cleanse my face with this following my workout. Oh yea, did I mention that this product is 97.00% natural??

Lipgloss Therapy

As we know, I have been hitting the gym something serious. I am really trying to make better food choices and have a regular workout routine. Tuesday afternoon, I decided to take a yoga class. I had already finished my cardio and strength training exercises for the day and still had a little energy, so I was like what the heck. This was an intense 2 hour yoga class with a Ukraine lady, whose english was, well....ya know (it actually made me laugh a couple of times at how she put her sentences together...so cute.). The class was difficult. The stretching, the bending, the poses.....OMG!! Well, the next day my back was sore!!! So before I went to my "Body attack" class the following evening (yesterday), I stopped into the CVS nearby to check out Revlon's new ColorStay Mineral Lipglaze (tried it...hate it). It is supposed to last up to 8 hours. I decided to test it against an hour of "body attack" class....I was disappointed that it failed miserably. Not to mention the smell was horrible and I hate sponge tip applicators. But all was not lost, because I also picked up Revlon's Beyond Natural Cream Lipgloss in Berry (a deeper neutral pink).....I lOVE IT. The color is beautiful, the consistency is creamy, and the smell is so yummy. It deposits just the right amount of shine and color. No icky sponge tip applicator...it comes in a tube. I woke up this morning excited to put it on. I love the way my lips feel.

Go out and try these!!! They come in 7 creamy shades, so there has to be a color for you.

Bobbi Brown reformulated her Shimmer lipsticks.....They have even been renamed to Metallic Lipcolor...

I have the Pretty Pink shade, which I like. It is a natural pink shade on me.

The formulation is creamier with more of a gold shimmer than the older frostier version. I am not sure if I like all of the shimmer. I love the consistency though. I think I like to get my shimmer from a gloss rather than from a lipstick.

The Metallic lipsticks should launch some time in October....

Make Up Forever Face and Body Foundation

This has been a favorite of mine for a really long time!!!! The consistency is soooo light and smooth. It is a water based foundation that us professionals use when we want skin to look like skin, but also when we need something that is water-resistant. It dawned on me to write about this when I went to the Sephora in Philly/King of Prussia to pick some up(restock)....**I was just taking a day trip to get outta DC for a minute**

All you do is shake the bottle to mix, and apply with a brush (I prefer to use a kabuki like brush to buff the product in). It feels like there is nothing there, but it evens the skin out beautifully!! For those who need a little more coverage, just do an extra layer or apply a dap of concealer on areas where you need it and....there you have it, beautiful flawless skin!!!

Given the name of the product, it is safe to assume that you can use this on uneven areas of the body. You can also use it to give a faux tan (using a shade or two darker than your normal foundation shade), just remember to let it set for about 2 minutes...then LIGHTLY powder.

It comes in 21 delectable shades, so yes, there is a shade for you.

Amel Larrieux inspires me because she uses simple, natural products for her beauty. Giving Myself Some Credit

My brand new discover card arrived in the mail today....yay!!!!! I am now on my way to further establishing good credit history. I think it's ironic that today, before hitting the gym, I take a trip to Barnes and Noble to pick up Kelly Rowland's Ab bible (supposedly she references this before she eats anything tempting and points to this as the source of her fabulous abs), the Abs Diet For Women. I pick up the new Allure, Muscle Fitness for Women, and Harper's Bazaar and make my way upstairs in the direction of the cafe. For some odd reason, I found myself standing in line ordering a double chocolate cupcake. I sat down and devoured the poor thing (almost bitting my finger off in the process). I ate the cupcake so fast that I didn't even remember eating it!!!! I immediately felt guilty (not to mention stagnant), but what cheered me up was reading Collier Strong's comments on perfecting skin for skincare ads (hey, you are going to have to go read the article...not what this post is about). So then, after calling the bf to let him know of my betrayal, he said, "hey somtimes you have to give yourself credit. You had a hard work out." Genius and ironic that the moment after we arrived home from the gym my discover card was in the mailbox waiting for me to unwrap it!!! It's so cute and pink, with my first initial on it!!

The Best Part of My Day

I have been on a healthy diet tip for the past 3 weeks now, recording every single thing I eat, the caloric amount, along with intense workouts 5 days a week (give or take a day..lol). The Gold's Gym Women's Locker room has literally become like my second bathroom. Now, when I purchase any product, I have to purchase an extra set for the gym bag. I go in around 8am, workout for an hour (sometimes hour and a half) and head to the locker room. Now, don't get me wrong, I HATE working out. I love the new diet, because I don't feel so blah anymore.

So what's the favorite part of my day, you ask?? I love peeling my layers of workout clothing off (honey, there are LOTS layers to pull off...lots is needed to nip, tuck, and hold down) and heading to the shower. I carry my Olay Ribbons Body Wash, Burt's Bee's Honey and Shea Butter Body Butter, and Vaseline Cocoa Butter Smoothing Body Butter. The warm water relaxes my muscles, and after I apply my butters(while still wet). First the Burt's Bee's then the Vaseline Cocoa Butter on top (then I go back over the cocoa butter with the honey and shea butter....what can i say, I love the smell of this...light and sweet). I put my makeup on and get ready to start my day. I feel good, I look good, and then I do a final look in the mirror and I am quickly reminded why I put myself through an hour (sometimes hour and a half) of torture: I look good!!!!

My absolute favorite part is massaging the body butter into my skin. The smell and the texture is just so invigorating!!! It's almost like a mini visit to the spa every morning!!! I love the look on the guy at the front desk who says "hello" and "goodbye" to me when I leave. I come in looking comfy and leave looking chicly casual (and pretty!!). The look on his face just confirms what I already know, but the look is reassuring and is that last bit of unnecessary confidence that starts my day.

Self-Maintenance Night

Back when I was a lonely college student (well, still am but I am progressing), I used to look forward to Friday Nights to do my weekly beauty maintenance routine of deep conditioning my hair, giving myself a pedicure (go to a nail salon with the annoying lady talking to you the whole time you are trying to relax got on my last nerve), shaving my legs, and catching up on my magazine reading. My friends used to laugh at me, because instead of going out I had my "self-maintenance night," Maybe they laughed because I named the day.....

Well, it's Friday night and I decided to revive the beauty ritual. I am feeling awfully lazy, because of the workouts, but I can't bear to look at my feet in their current condition any longer(poor boyfriend...lol). So even though I have an 8AM appointment with Gold's tomorrow, I have to do something about these feet. Plus, I am too excited to see them after I apply the polish!!

Gimme Some Suga'

Tired of spending money on fancy scrubs?? Well, I have a solution for you: sugar!!!
I happened to do this when I ran out of Bobbi Brown Buffing Grains a couple of months ago, and I have been adding this to my cleanser every since.

All you do is buy a pack of sugar. Just the regular sugar that you use to sweeten tea or coffee with-not the sugar in the raw. The size of the sugar particles are a little to large. Add the sugar to your cleanser or apply your cleanser and then take the sugar and apply on top (this is what I do). If you add the sugar directly to your cleanser, make sure that you add enough so that the cleanser doesn't become a uniform mixture. Exfoliate as usual. Rinse with warm water and bam!!! Your skin should feel smooth and hydrated!!!

Serums: The Summer Moisturizer

Lately with the weather being toasty, I have switched from moisturizer to serums. Serums have the hydrating properties of a moisturizer with a lighter feel. Plus, they don't give you as much of a "greasy" look as some moisturizers can while you wait for them to sink in. The right serum can be like light a vitamin taken with a tall glass of water for your skin. Here are my favorites:

1. Chanel Hydramax + Active Serum - It's Chanel!!! Creator of all things pretty!!! I ALWAYS put this on right before my foundation. After I apply it, my skin feels like it has been sprayed with a light refreshing mist of water. It feels supple, hydrated and ready for makeup application. There is a moisture boosting complex that apparently helps skin to retain moisture. For those of you with drier skin, try the cream. It's lovely!!!

2. Bees Naturally Ageless Intensive Repairing Serum- I have only been using this for a week, but we have already forged a strong bond. I wear this on my "no make up days" or right after I wash my face at the gym. This contains Evening Primrose Oil (an ingredient that is found in a couple of Bobbi Brown products), Borage, and Pomegranate. All these ingredients help to fight aging...or atleast to keep you a little bit more preserved. I have recently been using alot of this line. Most of the products are 99% natural. This serum kicks butt to be $25.

Yep, only two. From the products that I have tried (not that many serums as of yet), I really like these.

Mona's Favorite Products for Summer

Yep, It's still hot here in DC. Today was a beautiful day...actually all this week was lovely (hot...but bearable). With the weather being a HOTT, I decided to give you a run down of products that I am loving right now:

1.Burt's Bees Honey Lip Balm- The smell of this alone keeps me reapplying it!! The texture is light and lovely. It leaves just a soft glisten on the lips with alot of moisture. Plus it's 99% natural!! This is great right before I hit the gym.

2.Bobbi Brown Lip Balm- Ok, I know that you are thinking 2 lipbalms, but I sleep with this one on at night. I know it's excessive, but it's my lips. LOL. I love this for night. I like it so much even the boyfriend wanted to try it, so now we both sleep with it on at night (he wears his in the day too...lol).

3. Burt's Bees Naturally Ageless Intensive Repairing Serum- I read about this in a magazine earlier this week and decided to pick it up. It is formulated like a light oil. I prefer to do serums in the summer 'cause it's just so hot to do normal moisturizer. I put this on after I wash my face at the gym. The smell is awesome!! It is formulated with Pomegranate and Evening Primrose oils (there are actually alot of other oils in here as well), which helps to keep my skin youthful and glowing!! I went out for crabs with some friends on Friday and everyone was asking me what I was using on my skin. I even had a little breakout on the forehead, but I guess the glow was a distraction. Plus, its only 25 bucks, which is relatively cheap for a serum.

4. Brown Creamy Lipcolor in Rose Petal and Italian Rose- What can I say.....I love Bobbi!!! I love the texture of these lipsticks. They feel like a lipbalm going on, but they have sheer color payoff. This is a great formulation to try colors that you wouldn't normally wear like pinks and corals. Rose Petal like a natural pink on me. Italian Rose makes me look a little more refined. They both offer a sheer wash of color with excellent texture. I actually love all the colors, but I find myself wearing these two most often.

5. Vaseline Cocoa Butter Smoothing Body Butter- I get excited to take a shower, because I know I will be applying this shortly afterward!!! I love it. When I buy it, I have to purchase like 3 at a time!!. That's how fast I run through these things...plus, I keep one at the house, one for the gym bag, and one for the boyfriend's gym bag (he love it too....he's slowly turning into a metro). I love the glisten and the slip that it leaves on my skin.

6. OPI MOD Nail Lacquers in Greenwich Village(green), "It"(neon yellow), and That's Hot Pink- I love bright nail polish!! I only wear bright colors on my toes, but it looks so cute and summery when I wear open toed shoes. There's nothing better than sporting a cute pair of pumps with neon colored nail polish.

I Can't Say It Enough

It is hot and humid here in DC. Yes, the heat wave is coming to a close but it is still too hot for a full face of foundation.

If I see another woman on the street with a butt load of foundation on, I will have to give her a ticket!!!

I know we all don't have perfect, model-like skin but a full face of foundation?!?!? Is it that bad?? I have seen women on the street with foundation literally blended down onto their necks. Why??

It is important to remember that while all these cosmetic lines have such great visuals out for the summer, these ads are done in a studio. Everything from the temperature is controlled. I know we all wanna look cute with layers upon layers of eyeshadow and falsies, but please save yourself the trouble of looking....well, silly with sweat pouring down your face. Save those things for the afternoon when the sun has given us a break. Seeing a women with a full face of foundation and sweaty is the equivalent of a girl walking down the street in some bad ass pumps with a bad ass walk (the my feet hurt walk).

The only thing I have been wearing in this weather is concealer and that is kept to a minimum. I would also encourage everyone to try Origins gel cheek stain(i love the coralberry and raspberry shade) and Tarte cheek Stain (Try Bronze Goddess and Blushing Bride). I love these. They smell delicious and are perfect for summer weather for those whose skin can be a bit oily. Of course, I am doing the mascara (water proof, bronze liner (daytime), and moisturizing lipstick (gloss is cool for night...but walking around with a sweaty face and gloss lips is like...ummm....no).

What's on Mona's Face

Okay....well right now nothing (I sit here typing in the nude preparing to get ready for the day), but I have been wearing:

1. Bobbi Brown Protective Face Lotion SPF 15 and Dermalogica Intensive Eye Repair ( I do a couple of coats of moisturizer....its hot but the skin needs moisture)

2. Since I have a little hyperpigmented area in the inner corner of my eyes, I have to correct before I apply concealer. Now, I am all about the high end product, but lately I have been trying drug store in an effort to shine light on these products that cater to the African American consumer. So I correct/neutralize that area with Black Radiance Concealer Stick in 8003. Then I apply Black Opal Flawless Perfecting Concealer in Bronze 05 on top and gently tap in with the pads of my finger. (products found in CVS or Target).

3. I set it with Bobbi Brown Loose Powder in Pale Yellow.

4. I apply Bobbi Brown Blush in Rose to the apply of my cheeks and blend slightly upward and outward.

5. I fill my brows in with a combo of Bobbi Brown eyeshadow in Cocoa (all throughout the brow) and Chocolate/Espresso (in the tail area). I like my brows to be a bit lighter than the hair on my head for a highlighted effect.

6. I am all about the nude/pinky/tangerine-y lip so I use Laura Mercier Lipstick in Patchouli (nice pinky-beige) followed by either Bobbi Brown lipgloss in Tangerine (nice orange/coral) or Bobbi Brown Lipgloss in Pink Rapsberry (pink with a lilacy glittery undertone).

7. For me in the summer it is all about effortless looking beauty so I opt to do a nice chocolate shimmer on the eye with an Espresso gel liner. All by Bobbi of course.

8. I have been wearing Clinique Lash Doubling Mascara

9. I finish off my Body with NARS BODY Glow all over and then I spray a little Escada Sunset Heat (i love fruity scents...this came out last year...Escada always comes out with a new scent for summer).

**Notice, I don't wear foundation in the summer. Nothing feels worse or looks worse than a sweaty face full of foundation. I just correct what needs to be corrected and leave it at that. When you add foundation to places that don't need it, you run the risk of looking artificial. Summer is all about looking like you woke up gorgeous, not like you had to paint it on.

Meeting Bobbi Brown

This was the total highlight of my life!! I got to sit in on all the new products that will be coming out for Fall 08 and Spring 09. Let me just say that the line is going in a new direction. I LOVE IT!!! Of course, I have been sworn to secrecy about the specifics, but she is moving in a more colorful direction.

Okay, so Bobbi is like 5'0" and beautiful!! She has this simple elegance about her that puts you at ease. I was expecting her to be surrounded by papparazzi with aviators on....but nope, just her. She was very open to new ideas and suggestions on how to improve the line. Artist were even bringing her products from other lines just to show her how they would like a particular product to be formulated or packaged. I thought that really showed how humble and open she is. I took a picture with her, but I haven't gotten it back yet, so I will post later (don't hold me to it!).

By the way, she was so smitten with me, she asked me to be a model on QVC!!! Toot!! Toot!!!!!!!

Two weeks ago, I went to my favorite place in the whole entire world: Sephora. I picked up NARS BODY GLOW (the one with the bronze shimmer particles). I love it!! It gives my skin this satiny smooth feel and the smell is perfect for the spring weather. This is great for all those girls who are a little pale or just want a little extra bronze shimmer on the skin for the summer. Spring and Summer is not the time to walk around with pale legs. To get the most out of the smell, I sprayed Michael Kors on top. Genius!!

L'oreal HIP Color Rich Cream Crayon

I just had to try the new L'oreal Cream Crayons. The ads for the products look so inviting, and the colors can give the intensity of a Department Store Brand minus the pain to your "pocketbook." Plus, I have used the foundation and pigments and loved it!!! So, I picked up three one in Attentive (Gold..perfect for Spring/Summer beauty and on trend), Authentic (Rich Hunter Green...good for a day when you want a pop of color), and Intricate (Rich Navy...nice option for a smokey eye). Needless to say that I LOVED them!! The colors were so rich and creamy and they had just the right amount of shimmer!!These can be used as liner or directly on the lid as an eyeshadow. I did a quick little test as soon as I left the store on the back of my hand just to see how long they would last. After a couple of hours, they were still there and hadn't smudged!! I can't wait to try the the new glosses!!!

My "momma" is in town all this weekend!!!! She is a low maintenance type of gal when it comes to beauty products. The only thing she needs is a moisturizing cream, cleanser, and a little foundation on days when she feels she needs it. So ....I wanted us to have a mother-daughter beauty night. WIth me being on a budget, I decided to schedule an appointment at The Aveda Institute in DC, because of the reduced rates (the services are performed by qualified students). It was the best experience I have ever had!! She started by gently cleansing my skin, then an assessment to see which service would benefit me most. My area was the whiteheads around my nose. Next, she exfoliated my skin with a little rotating brush (wonderful). Placed a hot towel to open my pores to make the extraction easier and to cleanse. After the cleansing she placed a hydrating gel mask all over....It was lovely!!! In addition to the wonderful facial, Sheila also incorporated massage. She left no pore unclogged and no muscle untouched!!! She was sooo gentle and her voice was sooo comforting. For the entire hour, I was in paradise. When my mother and I were reunited at the end of the experience, her skin looked equally amazing!! I asked her aesthetician what my mother's skin type was and she said, "normal....she has really beautiful, smooth skin (which I already knew)." I smiled and said, "thanks momma....I guess I get it from you." This was confirmed by Lakeisha's nod (my mom's aeshetician). I quickly booked another appointment with Sheila for next month !!! My skin was glowing and I felt relaxed. This experience was priceless!!!

Well, I'm off to another shopping field trip with mom in Philly. We have lots of ground to cover. She is leaving tomorrow afternoon.

My Grandma's Rouge

This week has been an eventful one. I have been busy, and being busy means no time for a full face of makeup. I have literally had only 5 minutes to do my makeup before leaving the house. With such little time, Bobbi Brown Velvet Plum Pot Rouge has been my saviour. It goes on the lips and cheeks, adding a natural hint of color and glow to the cheeks and lips. The pot rouge comes in like 10 different colors all wearable for EVERY skin tone. It comes in a cute little pot, so you can use your fingers for a quick application. The texture reminds me of my grandmother using her lipstick back in the day for blush. Cute idea!!!

Holla Chicas!!!!

Today was a down day, but was quickly brightened by a chance encounter with a fellow beauty junkie, like myself, eager to learn about great beauty finds and tips (Vonetta, I hope you're reading). She actually gave me a great idea to wear on Saturday (that's the day that I do my creative looks). It is on trend which is a plus, and I know it will look GAW-GUS (Lianne) on me!! Ok so here is the look:

1. Bobbi Brown Cream Shadow in Glacier (shimmery white with champagne shimmer)
2. Urban Decay Matte Eyeshadow in Yeyo (matte powdery white)
3. Christian Dior BLack Out Mascara

No Liner. The White shadow is enough!!

To balance out the rest of the face just a nude lip (Bobbi Brown Tinted Balm in Brown...gives me a polished, natural lip without the shine), and Bobbi Brown Bronzer in Deep (matte deep reddish brown).

Don't be afraid to try this look!!! It sounds scary, but beauty is about constantly bringing something new and fresh to the table!!! I hope to see lots of gals walking about with White shadow on this weekend!!

SHocking Pink Lips

Sorry for the brief hiatus, but I didn't have any inspiration coming from the world of beauty lately....well not until this past Thursday. I just happened to come upon the best fuschia colored lipstick-gloss duo. Before I tell you the brand, I just want to say how I love Chanel Cosmetics. Not only is this brand responsible for most of the beautiful faces that grace the red carpet at the Oscars, but Chanel always produces some of the best beauty trends on the runway. As much as I love the brand, I wish they would formulate foundation and concealer shades for women with deeper complexions (not everyone has indian in their family...lol...I couldn't resist). We want to be able to enjoy the velvety smoothness of your foundations as well.

Okay so it isn't surprising when I announce that the shade is a product of Chanel. Ladies, I really cannot help myself. I try to stay away from the chanel counter and from their website, but "every time I try to leave something keeps holding me back, me back....telling me I need you in my life" (LOL).
So with the weather starting to break, I felt it was time to go ahead and find my perfect pink/fuschia pout for spring.Now I love drugstore brands like MAC just like the rest of you, but sometimes quality and color just plays a bigger part in my brand selection. I wanted something that didn't have any shimmer (fuschia +shimmer= too much), vibrant like myself, had a moisturizing feel, and had cute packaging. I don't worry about "something that will complement my skin tone" ( i hate when women ask me that), because I can mix in a liner color or lipgloss to alter the color and make it work. First I applied Rouge Hydrabase in Coco Pink(a shocking pink), then applied Glaze Glossimer(a sheer pink) on top. Gorgeous!!!! The color felt sooo light on my lips and lasted for so long that I even forgot that I had anything on.

I thought I'd just let you gals (and guys..)in my top 6 (random number right?) Favorite Lipgloss for Spring 2008.

6. Estee Lauder Pure Gloss in Candy. These glosses are really pigmented. This hot pink is perfect for spring and summer. It isn't overly glossly. They also smell lovely.

5. Prescriptives TintBalm in Smoothie. This is a nice sheer baby pink gloss. I love the packaging and adore the color. If you want to try out pink this is great.

4. L'Oreal HIP Gloss in Romantic. Red is always the trend. Good red to pair with other colors. This isn't a brilliant intense red, but good for those who don't want a full on red. This is a red that can be worn to work or class.

3. Clarins Color Quench Lipbalm in Orange Slice and Poppy. I just recently discovered these shades and I LOVE them!!! I like to mix them to get that perfect glossy coral pout for Spring. The Poppy is a nice red and orange slice is a beautiful orange.It gives a nice cushion for the lips as well.

2. Bobbi Brown Lip Gloss in Nectarine. This is a soft peachy shade. I love to wear this when I want shine and a nice neutral shade. Perfect for those days when you really want to look natural.

1. Shiseido Lipgloss in Mango Passion and Red Coral.
My absolute favorite!! This is the perfect shade for women of all complexions. The moment I tried these two on I knew I would be rockin' this look all summer. These colors add that extra bit of summer into any look. These can even be worn at work, class, wherever.

***Please don't overdo the glossy lip. Make sure to exfoliate lips first. Glossy looks better on smooth lips!!!

I love myself some dewy skin!!! The way it can rewind the years on even the most dull and tired complexion is just amazing! I cannot understand for the life of me why the "beauty gods" have decided to go with semi-matte skin for Spring '08. I know in the dead heat of summer the last thing we want is to have a combination of dewiness and sweat, but dewy skin looks healthy!!! Anywho, with that being said I am pleased to announce two new products. Chanel has just launched its new Mat Lumiere Foundation. Ladies, I LOVE it!! It gives excellent coverage and glides on effortlessly. It comes in 11 lovely shades.Quite different from the traditional cream to powder formulations, which can leave your skin looking a hot cakey mess. This is Perfect for the oily girls (just in time for summer and spring break for some of you), especially during the face melting days of the DC humidity and 90 Degree temperature. With this foundation you can tell the summer to "bring on the heat!"

Also, this is still in the works, but I got to get a peep at a new Bobbi Brown Liquid Matte foundation that is still in the testing phase. I actually got the color matched on me. It was perfect!!! It had a beautiful golden undertone, which is lacking in some of the deeper shade selections. I love Bobbi's products but for some reason (seems to be the case with alot of lines...) the deeper shades tend to have more cinnamon undertones than the promised golden. I'm looking for the product to be out next year.

Gifts for the Makeup Girl in Your Life

Have a friend with a birthday coming up, but not sure what to get them? Don't even think about gettting a thoughtless gift card..... Well, if your girl or girlfriend is a makeup girl or product junkie (like myself) why not make them a goodie bag. Here's my idea of the perfect gift (hint, hint...lol).

1. A makeup bag.
I love a cute little bag that I can use to store my products in. Something that will fit in my purse with different little compartments that separates the glosses from the eyeshadow and a few spaces for my brushes. Don't give it to us empty!! Splurge on the bag and get little drugstore eyeshadows and lipgloss. Sephora has metallic faux leather bags that can double as a clutch (and they come in a wide range of colors).

2. A Mini Brush Set
The idea of having a set of brushes for travel, one to keep in the purse, or in the drawer at work is genius!! Being able to take out your little brushes to touch up is so convenient. I love the new little Pink Rapsberry Brush Set that Bobbi has come out with. It comes with a blush (or powder) brush, eyeliner (my favorite), eyeshadow, and lip brush. The size of the set can literally fit in your pocket and the hot pink lining is perfect for the girlie girl.

3. Palette Systems
A great way to get everything to fit inside that cute little bag you just purchased, is to get palettes. The come with up to 6 shadows or lipsticks in most cases. Some even come with a full face inside-blush, lipstick, eyeshadow (which can double as liner). Chanel has the cutest little eyeshadow palette for spring (all the shadows are shaped like Camelias). Any girl would adore this!!!

4. Trial Size Goodies
Take a stroll down the trial size aisle in any drugstore and you have found a goldmine (even in some bed, bath, and beyond)!!! There are trial sizes of everything from skincare items to toothpaste!!! You can even visit your local beauty counter for samples of products. Great makeup bag stuffer!!!

Feeling the Winter Blahs

I am sooo friggin' tired as of late. I have been going to bed every night at around 9pm. I do believe in the "early to bed, early to rise" saying, but it isn't helping. Sure I get up at 6am, but by 2pm I am ready to crash. I need a pick me up, like a visit to a salon to get a conditioning treatment and scalp massage, while getting a pedi/mani (I can't tell you how long those dogs have been neglected..lol). Time to have a self-maintenance night, that usually boost my energy. Yesterday, I met up with friends to go see the new Carol's Daughter freestanding store in Wheaton Mall and was yelled at by my friend, because of the neglect for my hair. So I think it is time for a long "self-maintenance night". This is where I give myself a pedicure while sitting under my borrowed hairdryer conditioning my parched tresses. I have been wearing my hair back in a bun this whole week (maybe 2 weeks). I saw a avocado and banana recipe for a hair conditioner online, so I think I may try this.

Queen Latifah's new collection of makeup with covergirl is absolutely and surprisingly fabulous!! Yesterday, after a visit to Wheaton Mall to see the new Carol's Daughter store, I made my way to Target. I had been curious about the line so decided to try the Queen Collection Liquid Makeup in Sheer Espresso. Not only was the match perfect (no ugly red undertones like some brands), but it felt like water on my skin. It didn't dry down to an overly matte finish like some foundations intended for women of color. It actually gives a semi-matte finish, but without the matte feel. It really does give continuous hydration. If you need a little extra coverage, just apply one layer (wait for it to dry) and then another. It offers a decent range of coverage (a little goes a long way). This is perfect for the summer and winter months. During the winter, just be sure to moisturize your skin before application. During the summer this really could replace your tinted moisturizer. I would suggest just applying a light gel moisturizer and then apply this. At a price of $6.49, it is worth a try. It comes in 12 shades, so there is a match for everyone!! It is available at just about any drugstore (CVS, Walgreens, Target). For those of you in DC, I love the new CVS right by the U-Street Metro.

Also, another great foundation find is the Chanel Vitalumiere Satin Smoothing Fluid Spf 15. This product feels like butta' on the skin. The way it glides and smoothes the skin's surface is astonishing!! Perfect for those looking for coverage, hydration, and something to smooth out the little tell-tell signs of aging. It leaves the skin looking flawless and radiant ( I sound like I'm reading off the bottle...lol). I tried it this weekend in Chestnut (a deep caramel color), and I was hooked!! This "satin smoothing fluid" (to call it a foundation is an insult) is good for skin that is suffering from a case of the winter blahs. There is a slight drawback for those of us with deeper complexions (very minor if you know how to blend and mix), there isn't a shade past Beyonce. However, I still LOVE the "satin smoothing fluid." How did I ever live without you?

Not Another One!!!

I am a firm believer in there is no such thing as "Bad hair" or "Bad Skin" but ladies after this weekend I think I may have to take the latter back. I had a photoshoot for a magazine Monday, and when I saw this model's skin I really wondered if she had just managed to sneak in. I don't know how she could possibly be signed to an agency with skin like that. There was acne, acne, hyperpigmentation, and more acne. It was everywhere (really everywhere...I even saw it behind her ears)!!! I have gotten into the habit of airbrushing, and I don't like to pack foundation on. So of course, I just covered up the acne and evened out her skin. I'm no dermatologist, but my skin is even and free of breakouts. Here is some advice for those of you looking for a good skincare regimen:

1. Drink Water and eat healthier. We are what we eat.

2. Get good skincare products. It doesn't have to be Uber-expensive. Just something that will hydrate and cleanse (without stripping) your skin. I'm not a fan of the acne systems because they tend to be drying, but hey if it works. Just be sure to moisturize. I would also recommend trying just plain ole' Aloe fresh from the stem.

3. See a Dermatologist. If you have purchased every cleanser and acne system out there, go see a board certified dermatologist. They can prescribe medication that will help.

Spring Beauty Trends...The Rundown

For the spring, fresh, flawless, beautiful skin is in!! I am so excited about the new collections coming out!! Natural beauty is back in a big way!!! It's all about choosing colors that are naturally present in the skin to give it a natural enhancement. The summer normally brings on the heat and dewiness, but this year the skin will be more of a semi-matte (think less oil-glands in overdrive and more of clean, fresh and slightly powdered).

I've also seen alot of bright eyeshaow like lilac, blue-green, yellow, even orange. The key to mastering this look is to keep it soft and simple. This brings back the days of just being girl. Pick one color and stick to it...liner is optional. But please try to keep the liner on the upper lid!! Must have shadow is Rimmel London's Colour Rush Trio Eyeshadow in Fever (a brillant trio of lilac colored shadows). For those of you looking for more color try MaxFactor EyeTrio in African Violet (highly pigmented shades of baby blue, yellow, and violet).

Matte Pink lips- Say good-bye to the days of glossy hot pink lips (thank God!! some people were just abusing this). Matte lips are making a comeback. If you already own a hotpink lipstick that has a slight shine to it, just add a little translucent powder to matte the color.

Glossy Coral lips- Instead of doing a full on coral lip, glossy coral lips give you the intense coral color without being too serious. This is a color that looks good on everyone. If you can't find the perfect shade, layer a bright orange gloss over a sheer coat of your favorite redlipstick. Try Dior Addict 347 Orange Raphia

Rosy Cheeks- Bobbi Brown's New Pink Raspbery collection has a color that work for everyone. Pink brings a pop of youthfulness to the face that we can all use from time to time.

Liner- Liner has made a huge comeback for spring. It gives our eyes that definition
we need for night. Pair it with a matte pink lip.

Gold shadow- Gold is always in during this time of year. It helps to give skin that exotic sunkissed look. Dab it on in the inner corner of the eye

Full,Groomed Brows- A Fuller Brows can reverse the clock by a couple of years. This trend has been on the comeback for atleast a year. But notice, the key word her is groomed.

Friends....How Many of Us Have Them??

One of my favorite activities, besides trying new beauty products, is to hang out with my girls. This year I brought the new year in with the girls, and it had me realizing that we don't meet up enough. So much has happened with us that the dynamics of our relationships have changed(boyfriends,graduation, roommates). I remember 5 years ago (yeah, yeah....i'm a super senior ..so what!?!?), we all moved into Crandall eager to make new friends. We found it in each other and started to consider each other family, disclosing our deepest, darkest secrets to each other. Fast forward 5 years, and half of us don't even speak to each other. I never would have thought that the person I used consider my sister(way deeper than that sorority girl BS) would walk by me like I was a stranger and that I would do the same to her. I often hear women say that they get along better with men than women. I wonder why? So many women will forgive and remain loyal to a man that has done the unthinkable (physical abuse, mental abuse, you name it) but will always hold a grudge against the person that was on the other end of the telephone sharing tears with them at 3am. I am sick of women being in competition with each other (over trivial things..), and not wanting to help each other out. My friend once had to end a relationship with a friend that let her boyfriend take priority over their friendship. Women do this all the time. We get married, engaged, or just date a new guy and our dear old friends fall by the wayside until the guy does something wrong. The funny thing is is that a good friend will always be there to hear you cry or take you out for a drink when the guy has dropped you like a bad habit. You may think that you don't need women as friends, but it's times like those that make you wish that you (and me) had real friends-not the friends that you call only when you want to hang out and get a drink.

I admire the relationships of the women of Sex and the City, but I want to cultivate relationships like that of my own. Once after reading Sula (Toni Morrison), I felt like i had this great understanding of the necessity of female companionship. After the recent string of meetups with friends, I feel that even more. This is to say that I value all the friends that I have and I want to thank you all for being there for me when I need a pick me up(even those of you who have forgiven my bizarre behavior). The friends that come check on you when you're sick, call on birthdays (just remembering is good enough for me), call just to say "hello" (not when they need something), will encourage you to be the best you,and most importantly forgive you when you were just dead wrong.

Getting Out of a Bad Relationship

Just recently, I broke up with the love of my life. The love affair had been going on since I was in 14. Saying goodbye has been the hardest thing that I have ever done, especially when there is a common work enviroment. Glancing across the hall and not being tempted to see what's new or to try on the gloss that you wore on your first date with your boyfriend is hard!!! Bad habits really do die hard. I am trying to stay positive and just move forward without any negative thoughts of the past.

I remember our initial chance encounter like it was yesterday. I walked up and everything about it seemed so enthralling!!! I received so many promises of beauty, glamour, and success only to walk away scorned.

At times, I feel that I may have made the wrong decision. Maybe I was just too impatient? But after speaking with people much wiser than myself, I have come to realize that in order to move forward I need to just let some relationships die. Celebrity Beauty Inspiration : Gabrielle Union

Yeah, it's been about 2 weeks since I did this type of post. But looking at the cover of the new(well old) Essence Magazine just has me in awe of the gorgeous Ms. Union. She always looks fresh! This Nebraska native continues to represent African American beauty very well. I love the red lip (above). To steal Gabrielle's style:

1. Don't be afraid to wear color. She can always be seen working a bold red lip or a green smokey eye.

2. Glowing Skin. I think everyone in Hollywood makes their skincare a priority. She always has such a nice glow.

3. Natural Blush and Bronzer. Blush and bronzer duo help to give her that extra definition to bring out those gorgeous cheekbones.

4. Liner. Gabrielle loves a smokey eye. It isn't an over the top smokey eye. This effect is mainly achieve by liner, because of the shape of her eye.

5. Concealer. Just, because she has gorgeous skin doesn't mean that she doesn't have areas that couldn't use an extra highlight. In one of the looks below, she is wearing concealer 2 shades lighter to give open her eyes.

7 Days and Counting

I am a Georgian born-Floridian raised gal. I claim Florida as my stomping ground because that is where I grew up. In 7 days, I will be returning and I CAN'T wait!! I love DC (in the summertime), but this cold weather is not my skin's friend. I love playing around with new skincare products, but I love having the security in knowing that my old faithful Bobbi Brown products will work just fine. From the last post, you can see that I had to upgrade my moisturizer (which I love)...but geeeez...it's cold out there folks!! So anywho, I also need to upgrade my foundation as well. As of late, I have noticed that my skin is dry, so I moisturize really well only to put my stick foundation right on top. Not good ladies, because the stick contains silica, which just sucks all the moisture out that I just generously applied. Then after about an hour or so of wear, I am shiny. I don't mean a dewy shine, I mean a vaseline like shine. My skin is totally going in overdrive trying to produce more moisture to compensate for what is being suck up by my foundation. I finally tried Clinique's SuperMoisture Makeup in Chestnut. I love it. It stands up to the un-yielding winds, leaving my skin moisturized but not greasy. Perfect for those with normal to dry skin, looking for minimal coverage! It feels sooooo good!! I am actually very surprised with this line. I have never been a fan of Clinique, but lately it has been throwing me curve balls. I wouldn't recommend this for someone who has ance prone skin (although oil is not the number one cause of acne). But 'tis is the season to evaluate the type of skin that you have.

I also had to change my cleanser. I was using Bobbi Brown Lathering Tube Soap to remove makeup at night. I need something that will moisturize as well remove makeup. My favorite "how did I ever live without you" product is Shu Uemura High Performance Balancing Cleansing Oil. This is a dream come true at night when it is time to remove the makeup.It removes the makeup without stripping your skin of moisture, even leaving a nice cushy feel. I even get excited to cleanse my skin.

The Skin Oasis

I have finally ended my journey in the search for the winter's best moisturizer. I have slept with it on(no humidifier) and awakened to find that my skin felt as soft as a baby's bottom. No tightness or dryness around the mouth area!! I found it in perfect timing too!!! Finals are here and that means no sleep until December 19th. Between Finals, work, and freelancing my skin will need this extra boost.

Introducing.... MD Skincare Hydra-Pure Intense Moisture Cream!!! It was love at first touch. This made my skin feel so good!! The instant I rubbed this in, my skin felt like I had never drank a Cosmo, Diet-Coke, or a Starbucks Frap. I was surprised at my skin's reaction, because I didn't think that the cream would be heavy enough for what I needed. The Bobbi Moisture balm has been the only moisturizer that I have been using for the past year at night, so the difference in texture made me a little apprehensive. But... I had to have it!! The sales rep Greg at the counter was soooo helpful. It was really good to see that he was well read and well versed on the product that he was selling. Listening to him go over the product information pulled out chemical vocabulary (i'm a chem major) that I just recently learned. The most impressive part about this moisturizer is that it contains a chelating complex that binds with unwanted heavy metals, minerals, and impurities left behind by water, which helps to alleviate breakouts. Next I would like to find a hydrating skin mask to give my skin a boost at the end of the week.

Night Time Skincare

For the past few weeks, I have been waking up with dry lips and tight feeling skin!! I moisturize the heck outta my skin before I go to bed (Bobbi Brown Eye balm, Hydrating face cream, and Bobbi Brown Face Oil...I put the eyebalm all over my face). I even sleep with a bottle of Charge Water bedside so that I can spray myself at night. I have concluded that I need a new night time moisturizer and a Humidifier.
My skin needs something that is richer and heavier than what I have been using. Really, I don't even know where to start. I am working on a budget, so I will keep you updated on my findings. Tomorrow, I am definitely hitting up Nordstrom to see which lines past the test.

Visual documentation for the important milestones in your life should be perfect. Everything should look perfect so that your personality will radiate through the photo.I always look and feel happy when I know that I look good! Sometimes this doesn't happen if your hair and makeup isn't quite how you wanted it to look. Take out a recently taken photograph of yourself...Do you feel that you could have done a little more to look your best? You know...more concealer under the eye, more color on the lips,etc.

A week ago, I did an application on a young lady for graduation photos(congrats Tashira!!). We agreed that it would be best for her to look like herself only prettier and more confident. The exciting part was seeing how excited and pretty she was when I finished. Here are a list of products I used as well as a photo (taken after pictures):

I know that it has been awhile. Between school,my job (I need a new one), and photoshoots I haven't had anytime to update you. With my graduation approaching faster than I have time to breathe, I wanted to talk about makeup for the milestone photographs (you know highschool graduation, college graduation, wedding, etc). Okay, so go take out a recently taken professional photograph of yourself...go ahead, I'll wait. Evaluate it and point out something that you would like to change. Are your dark circles showing, brows groomed, skin look healthy? Basically, do you feel like you could have looked better? These photographs are historical documentations of you. You should look and feel your best on this day. Feeling your best will be acheived when you look your best.

I recently did an application on someone who is graduating this month (congrats Tashira). I kept the application very light, but enough so that her skin would look its best. She is also the only black woman to ever serve as a representative for Estee Lauder Cosmetics. The definition of modern beauty and a celebrity beauty inspiration to me. Liya takes it back to the days of the real supermodels. Let's take a look of the elements of her beauty.

1. Radiant Skin

Her skin always just seem to glow. It always looks healthy. In this case, I think genetics plays a more important role than the products that she uses. Let's not get it twisted though, I am sure she invests in skincare products to preserve what she has.

I know its early, but I am doing my Christmas Shopping today (for myself of course). With all the stress that has been going on in my life....I need retail therapy (this day was planned anyway). I like to call this day Mona's Black Wednesday. I would rather shop in peace and avoid long lines (maybe even a sale...but when do cosmetics ever go on sale?) than to dare venture into a store on Friday. Holiday Look: Metallic Eyes

With Thanksgiving and a boat load of other holiday parties just around the corner, it is time to gather the looks that you will be wearing!! I didn't even realize how fast the holidays were approaching, until a co-worker informed me last week that Thanksgiving was a week away. So what's hot to wear to family gatherings??? What to wear to the holiday party that your job will be hosting?? Don't worry...I have you covered. Just keep reading.

1. Metallic Eyes.

Metallic eyes are a great way to look festive during the holiday season. By metallic, I mean bronze, silver,gold, sage....basically anything with a hint of bronze, gold or silver shimmer to it. I love Bobbi Brown's new Metallics Collection. The palettes come with 3 metallic shadows that can be worn individually or combined. Be sure to pair these with liner on the top during the day and amp it up with liner in the waterline for night.

2. Smokey Eye

Well, enough said. You can't go wrong with a smokey eye. The type of smokey eye depends on the time of day. You can keep it PG during the day with a lighter color on the lid and just a tad bit of darker shadow in the crease, of course with liner on the top only.Pair with a nude lip and a warming blush or bronzer and you're set!! During the day try Bobbi Brown Best of Chocolate Collection. This palette comes with four eyeshadow shades on the bottom and four lipgloss shades on the top. You can even use the darkest shadow as your liner.

3. Red Lip

The red lip is oh so sexy. It's soooo sexy that it has to be worn alone!! Pair it with a nude eye and just a hint of blush. I think red or any color derivative of red needs some type of lip liner. The liner really helps to give that definition. As long as you find that perfect and appropiate shade of red you should be fine. My favorite lip combo for a red lip is MAC Nightmoth liner, Viva Glam I Lipstick, and the new 3-D lipgloss in Boundless (I love this gloss). Remember that you can always adjust the liner and gloss color to adjust the shade of red. Here are a couple of suggestions.

Kerry Washington is so gorgeous, talented (she directed Common's new video), and stylish. Her over all look is soft, classically progressive, and pretty. Skin is always radiant and bronzed to perfection. Her bone structure looks like a sculptor took a chiesel and went to work!! I love how she looks "done" but without too much of an effort. Kerry wears looks that the everyday gal can wear. She can normally be seen working the following lip/eye combos:

Must Have Product: Tinted Moisturizer

Tinted Moisturizer is such a lovely product!!! It can even out your skin tone, gives you a dewy radiant complexion, all without screaming FOUNDATION!!! Basically this product is foundation diluted with moisturizer. You can really make this at home (which is what I do!!) by taking your foundation (liquid or stick) and mixing it with moisturizer. This is an alternative to those who want to segway into wearing foundation and for those who have next to perfect skin. It gives a sheer and slightly buildable coverage. During the summer, it is a great way to create a faux "I just got back from St. Tropez" look by using a shade darker (this can also be done in the winter to keep your tan). Perfect for the already present cold months, because as it gives your skin the coverage that it needs to look flawless, it is also providing it with hydration. Although tinted moisturizers hydrate the skin, I would still recommend using a light moisturizer underneath (even for oily girls). Oil-free version work well for extremely oily girls. Let's take a look at the brands that I love!!!

1. Bobbi Brown Oil-Free Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15

This is my pick for those with oily skin. It will help to maintain your skin's moisture needs while giving it a glow (plus it has an SPF of 15)!!! It is oil-free so no need to worry about break outs. It comes in 8 shades. When first applying For those of us with a deeper complexion try MAC NW50.

2. Bobbi Brown Extra SPF 25 Tinted Moisturizing Balm

This product is so rich!! Perfect for people with dry skin!! It evens out the skin while hydrating it to help dry skin to heal. This product is used by the Bobbi Team at fashion shows to create that healthy model glow.

3. Prescriptives Traceless Skin Responsive Tint

I remember the first time I tried this product (Level 6). I looked in the mirror and was surprised the image looking back at me had such a nice glisten!! Needless to say that I purchased this product immediately. This is perfect is you have sensitive skin. There are only 6 shades, so if you need a slightly darker or lighter color try their Virtually Fress Skin Refining Makeup. It too is very light and gives a sheer coverage. It will leave your skin looking like skin.

4. Clinique Super Moisture Makeup

I am sooo impressed by this formulation!!! It blends so well and feels so good on the skin!!! The color selections are excellent and it is perfect for those with sensitive skin. The tube packaging is so cute and modern. This is hands down one of my favorite. It is not quite a tinted moisturizer, because the coverage is buildable, but it is definitely worth a try!!

Under The Radar: IMAN Cosmetics

Iman....The Somalian-born Supermodel who is married to David Bowie (strange couple I know). She made her modeling debut in the 70s. Twenty years later, after being fed up with the lack of color selection available to women of color developed her own cosmetics line- IMAN Cosmetics.

This line is absolutely amazing for women of color!!! I love that the line contains no red undertones, that are commonly found in other brands. All of the foundation shades have golden undertones. In addition to the undertone, the foundations are oil-free and contain silica derivatives, which help to absorb excess oil is commonly produced by ethnic skin. All of the names of the foundations are "earthy" names, such as Earth, Sand and Clay. The brand is sold primarily in Ulta stores, by Color Me Beautiful Reps,Sephora and my favorite place....Target. The price points are VERY reasonable, but vary depending on what retailer you purchase from!! You may notice that if you purchase the products from a Color ME Beautiful rep that the products are packaged a little differently, due to the brand being sold to Proctor and Gamble. Here are a few of my must have items in the line:

1. Iman Second-to-none Foundation Stick:
This stick is a must have for makeup artists and regular gals alike.It has medium to full coverage with a matte finish and can be thinned out by using a damp sponge or brush.I love, love , love that the foundations have golden undertones.You can swipe it on, and not have to worry about looking red by the day's end. It also helps to absorbs excess oil. If you have dry skin, don't fret!! Just moisturize really well before applying the stick.

2. Oil Blotting Translucent Powder-
Translucent Powder is excellent way to "set" your makeup. It absorbs oil very well helping to maintain a natural matte finish, but will deposit a little color. Since the powder deposits some color, the powder can be worn alone for a very small amount of coverage. I recommend choosing a color one shade lighter than what you would normally choose under the eye area (which is mainly the only place I "set" my makeup).However, if you wear a foundation that is a tad too light, use a darker color powder. The sponge that comes in the compact should be thrown away, because it can deposit too much powder (invest in a small powder brush). There are four color selections to choose from.

3. Sheer Finish Bronzing Powder
This was one of my beauty staples during the summer!! It is the perfect bronze color with a slight shimmer!!! I dusted this on my arms, legs, eyes.. EVERYWHERE!! Especially on those nights when I was out on the town. It gives the perfect bronze glow. You couldn't tell me that I wasn't Beyonce!!

Makeup...Such a Touchy Subject!!!!

I know this is the second post within a couple of hours...but I was thinking, after having a discussion with a friend that I haven't spoken with in years about makeup. What is the big deal with women and makeup??? I don't understand it. Makeup is so taboo!! Women pride not wearing makeup like they pride being virginal at age 35. I can understand embracing your natural beauty, but walking around looking like you haven't slept in 15 years is not cute!! Here are some of the reasons I feel women don't:

1. Time

I can completely understand this reason. I admit that I don't wear face products everyday ( I am entitled...I do other's makeup so much). Sometimes I am running late and taking the time to put on concealer, eyeshadow, blush, etc. would just be downright inconsiderate (especially if someone is waiting). But I try to wake up an extra 30 minutes to do something that enhances my beauty. As women we spend time doing so much for others (the men in our lives, the children, the job...) that we neglect ourselves.When will it be ok to invest time into yourself? Spending an extra 30 minutes to add that "extra-ness" to your look is not selfish or vain.

2. Knowledge

I get asked to do beauty forums all the time. The women out there are clueless as to how to apply makeup. I know it can be intimidating standing in the mirror with no clue how to get a nice line with a liner brush. If you don't put in the time, you will never know. It can be discouraging not getting it right the first time. Rome wasn't built in a day. If you need someone to assist you then visit a local beauty counter and get help. I don't know about you, but I hate always being someone else's cheerleader. You know what I mean....There is always that one woman who seems like she has it all. Everything from her perfectly manicured nails, trendy clothes, and beautiful makeup seems to be in place. She even has the confidence to match. When will that be you?

3. Invalidation

Wearing makeup seems to make women appear to be artificial. It almost seems to invalidate their beauty to some. Taking out your sophisticatedly packaged compact to touch up your makeup seems vain. Face it...we are!! All the women in Hollywood would not make special appearances without makeup. It's why we have them as beauty inspirations. I hope no one thinks that they look like that naturally. Their cheeks are enhanced by blush, brows are filled in and shaped to perfection, and their weave is done by the industry's best. Makeup enhances your own natural beauty. Just because you wear foundation doesn't mean that you have bad skin.

4. Poor Representation

I know I have seen women on the street with blush from their cheeks all the way down to the jawline. Women who are applying their makeup incorrectly are representing what we don't want to look like. New York is a prime example. If I didn't know what makeup was and someone pointed to her as an example, I would run to the hills. Don't let their poor application taint your view. This is why we should trust professionals. Some times it isn't a good idea to listen to girlfriends, who are sometimes just as clueless as we are. I have over heard girlfriends telling their friends that they do not need concealer or foundation when clearly this person looks like they can hold $50 worth of groceries under their eyes. Sometimes mascara and lipgloss is not enough!!!

Under The Radar : Prescriptives

I write alot about MAC, Bobbi Brown, and NARS. I just realized that I leave out another brand that I absolutely love....Prescriptives!! This brand is completely under the radar by most people. Prescriptives is good for sensitive skin, and it's the only place in a department store that you can get foundation, concealer, bronzer, and lipgloss custom made just for you!! We all have different undertones and Prescriptives speaks to that, so if you are one of those who are having a hard time finding your pefect shade...this is for you. I love the texture of the eye pencils and eyeshadows. They feel so smoooth and are so pigmented!! Since it is officially the "Holidaze," Prescriptives has come out with Holiday sets. This is a good way to try out the line without investing too much $$$. Here are some of my favorite things in the line:

1. Virtually Fresh Skin Refining Makeup

This is such a weightless foundation. It really feels like a tinted moisturizer, but with the coverage of a regular liquid (medium coverage). This is good for those who have minimal imperfections. My favorite characteristic about this foundation is how the foundation looks seamless. It gives your skin a radiant glow!!! There is also a nice shade selection.

2. Vibrant-C Skin Brightener

This cream hydrates the skin while giving it a healthy natural glow!! It has tiny pearlized luminizers that gives skin a pearlescent finish. There is a set that comes with the brightening eye cream, cleanser,super liner preventer, and cream. This is a must have in the beauty arsenal on those cold winter days when you wake up and your skin looks like "blah."

3. Tint Balm

For all the gloss girls!! I love these!! My favorite shade is Smoothie. It is a translucent pink with a hint of shimmer. All of the glosses have a nice glisten. The packaging takes me back to when I purchased my first lipgloss.

4. Powder

We all know that I am not a powder girl, but Prescriptives' Virtual Matte Oil Control Pressed Powder is great. It looks and feels so light on the skin. It doesn't give you that powdered look. It can be worn alone or dusted lightly ontop of foundation. The best thing is that it is an oily girl's best friend. Please use a powder brush!!

I didn't mention the concealer, because I prefer the custom blended concealer.

Fall into New Makeup

Today is such a great day!! The sun is shining, there is a nice breeze, and the leaves have turned that burnt orange color...We know what that means...Ladies, it's fall!!! With a new weather change, comes new makeup looks. Fall is the perfect time to wear makeup, because the weather is perfect. You can wear perfectly blended foundation without worrying about it melting off. I have been trying new beauty trends of my own with consultation from all my monthly mags and here are my FAVS:

1. Violet Eye Liner
Everyone is jumping on this wagon. Violet liner is hot for fall and winter, because it adds that extra punch of color to your look. Violet is a deeper shade of purple, so if you are afraid of wearing color on your lid this is a good way to segway into color. You can wear this with a nude eye or pair it with a mossy green shadow. I even saw this tip in the November issue of Essence. My favorites are MAC Liquid Last liner in Electrolady, Sephora brand liquid and pencil liners, and Bobbi Brown gel liner in Violet.

2. Matte Lipstick
Okay, I know all the lipgloss girls are sucking their teeth at this one (i.e, Monet), but glossy lips are not everyday. Can you imagine going to a formal event with lips looking like you just finished a 20 piece? No ma'ams!!! MAC has just come out with their new mattene lipsticks!! I LOVE them. They give you the coverage of a traditional matte lipstick without the dry feel of a matte lipstick. Lately, I have been rocking Classic Dame (classic red) with Powersuit (hot pink) with just a tad of gloss for a glisten effect (not glossy). I look like I just stepped off of Dior's runway. They last for hours, plus the color selection is great!!! There is a color for everyone...

3. Pink Blush
I know what you're thinking....pink blush??? Give me a chance.... If blended just the right way, pink blush can give you extra little ounce of youthfulness that we can all use from time to time, especially in the winter months. I like to pair pink blush with a nude eye and pinky-brown lip. My favorites are MAC Dollymix, NARS Exhibit A, Bobbi Brown Pale Pink, and Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick in Rose . The key here is blended with the right brushes!!!

4. Sage Eyeshadow
Sage is such a great earth tone color that screams fall. It has a nice golden undertone with just a subtle hint of shimmer. It looks good on everyone and the application can vary from intense to soft and diffused. Stila makes this cute little smudge pot in Jade that I really like. She also has a Moss palette with 3 shadow colors and a peachy colored blush that looks awesome.

Ahhh, the smokey eye! It's sooo sultry, so sexy, and so dang hard to master!

I have to admit though, I love a good smokey eye. Wearing one makes me want to put on a nice pencil skirt, a pair of peep-toes, and hightail it to a smokey jazz club. It has come a long way. Now the smokey eye has evolved into greens, violets, greys, and browns...no longer just the basic black (that's sooo ten years ago!..lol). A smokey eye can be paired with a semi-glossy nude lip during the day or a deep blackened red lip for evening.

The key to a smokey eye is to concentrate the color around the eye (closer to your lashes) rather than in the crease. As you travel north on the eye, the color should gradually become lighter. It is important that you evaluate the shape of your eye before diving in liner first. If you have alot of lid space when you look straight ahead, then you are good to go. However if you have smaller eyes, then make sure not to line all the way to the inner corner of the lower lid. This will only make your eyes look smaller. The tools necessary are:

1. Base Color

We all know that this is what will prevent your shadow from creasing and
will extend its wear. Because the darkest color will be located on the lid, the base color should be somewhat dark as well.

2. Lid Color

This should be your darkest color. Concentrate this color around your eye.

3. Mid-tone/Bridge Color

This should be the color that acts as the transition color. It creates the illusion of "smokiness." For example, if your lid color was black then your mid-tone color would be gray. Mid-tone colors Blend this very well!!!

4. Highlight Color

Highlight colors do not have to be an actual shadow. The natural skin under your brow could serve as a highlight color. A shadow color that is close to the color of your natural skin is an option. I prefer this option, because it looks more modern as opposed to the extremely light highlight. Using a shadow that is lighter than your mid-tone color could also be used but is optional.

5. Pencil Liner

You absolutely must use a pencil liner. This is the most important step. The liner will go in both the upper and lower waterlines to give that extra " yes ma'ams!" to your eye. Depending on the color of your smokey eye, the liner color will vary, but it should always match your lid color.

6. Mascara

Mascara will bring back the definition to your eyelashes!!!

7. Blending Brush

The colors must gradually transition into one another for it to be a smokey eye. A blending brush is key. I love the #217 and #224 brushes by MAC and Stila also makes an awesome one.

8. Smudger Brush

This will be used in smudging the liner. A Q-tip can also be used.

Remember to evaluate your eye shape. You do not want to look like you got punched or like a racoon!!!

Guten morgen!!!

Recently I have been noticing that there has been an increase in beauty literature outside of the big names in the industry. I took some time to read/skim through a couple of the books and here is my review:

1. Fracois NARS: Makeup Your Mind 3 out of 5 lipglosses

I like this book, but the packaging sucks. I think this book is good for those of us who need to see a little color in our lives. It is written like most books on beauty, but the visuals are a bit different. He opens the book with the basics of makeup like good skincare and brushes, then he moves into the actual makeup part. On one side of the page there is an untouched girl and on the opposite side of the page she has on a full face. He incorporates a transparency over the side with the full face with products and colors that he used. The faces in the book bring me back to the 80s and 90s style of makeup (bright colors, bold makeup, constructed makeup, thick brows), which is when NARS really took off in his career. The brows were bushy (in the book he expressed his love with full untouched brows), and the use of color was unrestricted. The visuals were good, but I think I would have liked this book more if the book was packaged differently. This is not really for those who are on the low end of the artistry skill. Its good to have on the shelf as a reference and a fun read. He gives instruction with the "there are no rules in makeup" way. I love that he states this, because I share this belief as well.

2. Thalia: Lessons in Lipgloss and Happiness 3 out of 5 lipglosses

For those of you who don't know who she is...you better ask somebody!!! She is the Latin singing sensation from Mexico. Before she began her singing career, she was a Mexican soap star. Anyway, as you guessed it the book is geared mainly toward Latinas, but being an African American female, I still pulled out things that I could relate to. The advice offered are things that she personally does. I also like how at the end of the book, she has photos of Latinas rocking makeup that is multicultural ( I love the Bollywood look). This is a good read for everyone, because it is written simply and anyone can follow this advice. Plus, not all of the book is about makeup, she includes tips on living a happy, balanced life.

3. Carmindy: The 5-Minute Face 5 out of 5 lipglosses

This has been my favorite beauty read for almost a year now. I love this book!!! I can read it over and over again. Its like watching your favority movie and everytime you see something that you didn't pick up on the time before. She begins the book with the reservations that women have about applying makeup in the small time frame, so we only opt for mascara and lipgloss. This is soooo true!! I know alot of my friends that take on this routine, when they could use a little concealer under the eye and a pop of blush. Her book is very instructional. She touches on the importance of skincare and good brushes. She goes into good makeup options for every skin tone, and she didn't just push the brown girls into the "dark" skin category. The visuals are more for "everyday" but she also shows you how to create that "hot date at 8" look. Any woman of any ethnic background can read this book and find that it speaks to them. At the end of the book, she includes all the products that she used on the models and suggest alternate drugstore brands that were similiar. I love this book!!!

4. Bobbi Brown: Living Beauty 5 out of 5 lipglosses

I know people think I ride Bobbi products hard, but for good reason!!! She is a savior for the modern woman age 25+. She preaches the gospel of skincare, concealer, blush, lipgloss, and mascara. The target audience of the book was the woman over or approaching 50. I say GO Bobbi Go!!! The aging process has gotten a bad rep, by the media. It isn't embraced enough. I swear if I hear one more women picking apart themselves, by talking about how bad their crow's feet look, or how droopy their eyes are becoming I will scream !!! Bobbi encourages women to age gracefully and make the best of what they have. Of course she spends a whole chapter on GOOD skincare and the process that skin goes through as we age. Then she goes into things that we can do to instantly give ourselves a face lift, such as cream blush on the cheek, teeth whitening, a shimmery gloss, etc. My favorite section of the book is the "makeover" part. It appears as if her staff worked miracles!! You have got to see it to believe it!!! I love this book, because as a women who has not reached that age group, I still felt like the advice was good enough for me to use now. She touched on everything that women at that age and younger encounter....two toned lips, age spots, etc. This is a must read for everyone at every age!! Definitely worthy of a space on the shelf!!

HU Fashion Show ROCKS !!!!

Howard's Homecoming Fashion show was soooo on point!!! The vision for the show was genius !!!! Of course, I and two other talented young ladies provided the makeup. Micheal Knight of Project Runway and Cranberry Clothing (these girls are Howard Students) were just a few of the awesome designers. The looks for makeup were a few beauty looks and also some looks created by the great Pat Mcgrath herself from the John Galliano ready-to-wear shows from a couple years back. The beauty looks were the cat-eye trend, Brooke Shields brow, and the Fall 2007 Alexander McQueen. I loved the males who were brave enough to strut in heels, wigs, and a full face of makeup. However, the genius behind the show was not well received by a few a the amateur models. There were tears, claims of skin illness, and just down right resistance. I think one girl had the case of Naomi (or she thought she was Naomi)...don't worry no cell phones were thrown. I wonder if the real models actually do that in New York?? I doubt it, cause they wouldn't have a job...lol. Anywho despite, the few amateurs present ( I honestly think that they thought the show was about them....models are clothes hangers) there were very professional models who I look forward to working with again. The show also had guest appearances by the lovely Janelle Monae (she is sooo awesome....I spent the whole weekend looking for her album in stores but no luck), Camille McDonald from ANTM cycle 2 (she is soooo fabulous and sweet), and Ambreal Williams of ANTM cycle 8 (she is really down to earth).

Thanks to Michana and Adrianne for helping me !!!! You gals did a wonderful job!! I we can take over together!!!

So Much To Do...So Little Time

This week is going to be sooooo busy for me!! I have deadlines, fashion shows, photoshoots, and work!!! I really need to work on getting things done ahead of time. Sometimes I will start things and put them away. Then pick them up right before the deadline. Not Good. I must admit that I love it though!! I feel like the Pat Mcgrath of DC. I set trend!! Who would have thought that lil' ol' me from tumble weed county Florida would be a trendsetter?? My momma knew it all along!! I know this may be an early prediction, but soon we will be working side by side one day.

I told you I'd be back!!!

I wanted to talk about eyeliner today. Eyeliner is an important acessory in eye makeup. It gives the eye definition. By definition I mean it can either make your eyes pop (by saying hello here I am) or it can make your eyes look smaller (if you line in the water line...that pink part next to your eyeball) . The thicker the line, the larger your eyes will look, so if you have small eyes this is something for you. If you have small eyes, "draw" a very thin line. The object is to give definition without out making them appear larger. When paired along with mascara, it will bring definition to the eye as well as thicken the lash line, giving the look of fuller lashes. It is also the single most important thing in a smokey eye. There are several types of liners out there on the market:

1. Eyeshadow. This must be done with a brush. I like to use eyeshadow when I want subtle definition. Good for lining in the water line...for those of us with really sensitive eyes.

2. Gel Liner. This must also be done with a brush. This is good for basic definition and once it dries it is water proof. I am a fan of the Bobbi Brown Gel Liner, Stila liner pots, and MAC fluidline.

3. Liquid Liner. This comes with a cute little felt tip for easy application. It will give you a very defined line. Great for the new cat-eye trend!! Black Opal makes a nice navy and brown. Cover girl also has a new one developed by the great Pat Mcgrath herself.

4. Pencil Liner. Well, this is the traditional liner that mostly everyone has used. These are great for smudging and to use in the water line. When lining with these, it maybe easier to hold the pencil to the side.

Tips for getting the perfect line.

1. Don't try to "draw" a straight line right across your lid. Do more of a connect the dots or go little by little.

2. For a cat-eye, it maybe better to trace the shape out in pencil and then go on top with liquid liner.

No's for Liner.

1. BLACK LINER IS NOT EVERYDAY!!! If I see one more woman walking the streets with Elvira looking eyes, I will scream. Brown, green, violet, navy are all excellent colors that can be used. That is my biggest peeve!! I will be handing out tickets for violations!!!

2. Liner does not have to be thickly drawn on to make a point.

3. Please don't only line the bottom!! This will only be acceptable if you are in an avant garde fashion show of some kind.

How-to use:

Liner can be a bit tricky for some when trying to line the top. The basic thing to get down is that you want to get a close to your lashline as possible. Do not stretch you eye!!! When you do this, you cannot see what you are doing (maybe that's why I see women on the street with those extra thick black lines?). It's best to hold your eye open, and slowly trace out your shape. If you have a smaller eyeshape, you can continue the line down under the lashes (not in the waterline...it will make your eyes look small and closed). Make sure that the liner under the lashes is a bit softer than on the top for day and that the lines connect.

Weekend Recap

GOOD Morning!!!

This weekend has been hectic but also relaxing. My weekend started on Thursday. I got really excited about what's in store for holiday beauty. The brush, lip, and eye sets that come out are such good gifts and the price points are cheap (to yourself, family, girlfriends, etc.). I love these, because the packaging is fabulous!! It also gives me an opportunity to purchase things for family. I already know that I must get my mom a brush set. It also puts me in the mood to wear red. Not fire engine #1 red, but like a sultry, blackened red with my hair all slicked back into a chignon.

On Friday, I started on my way to the pool, but I had to take a detour. I had forgotten my swim cap and goggles, and I was not sticking a toe in the water without them. So instead of taking a swim, I decided to go to the Borders out in Pentagon City to catch up on my magazine reading. Those who know me, know that I love sitting in bookstores sipping coffee and reading magazines. I feel so relaxed, and I always leave feeling enlightened about the world of beauty. The smell of coffee early in the morning reminds me of being back home, the sound of the coffee machines, and just being there so early just gets me in a good mood. I also read (well more like scanned) the new Rachel Zoe (stylist to the rehab stars) book. Of course I skipped directly to the beauty section. I am really glad she included this, as makeup is an acessory. Then I went to my favorite spot in the world.....Sephora!! I went around sampling other products and what did I find ? The best skincare item ever !!! DDF Retinol Energizing Moisturizer and Silky C!!!! My skin felt so firm, yet soft and extra hydrated!! I couldn't stop touching it. I think I will make this a Christmas gift to myself. It's a bit pricey, but my skin felt so delicious afterwards it's worth it!! This is an investment. Friday night was fun, because I hung out with a friend. We laughed, chilled, spoke about politics, black people, of course makeupand had a good time. It was good to spend time with someone who truly appreciates beauty and makeup as much as myself.

Saturday night, I came home and spent an afternoon with the girls (Carrie, Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte), but I still managed to be in bed by 9. I had to get up at 6 am to doing makeup for an early photoshoot and report to work ontime. I'm beat, but the weekend was great!!

The Accidental Find

Yesterday, I am doing a quick little stroll through Sephora (as usual) just to try freshen up my makeup (i'm ghetto, I know....but doesn't everyone do it??). I am looking for a cute gloss to update my lips, so I head over to Smashbox to try out this lipgloss that has been voted in Allure as one of the best. Try it. Hate it. Well not hate it, but not impressed. I was looking for that something goes on nice and creamy, but not overly glossy. No disrespect to the lipgloss gals out there, but sometimes I like to look a bit more PG-17. Patent leather shiny lips just does not go with everything.

Back to the story... so I stumble upon Laura Mercier's new lip stain that I have been reading rave reviews about. I thought I knew the Sephora in Pentagon City like the back of my hand. I was not even aware that Laura Mercier was there!! There they were, sitting, looking pretty as if they were waiting on my arrival. At first, I was a little apprehensive about the pot-like packaging, because I don't like to dip my fingers into lip products (of course I used a lipgloss wand at the store...but it doesn't come with one). But then I thought...What the hell? It's all in the name of beauty. Now, I'm not one to jump on the bandwagon of a new product just because everyone else likes it, but when I tell you I LOVE this product, I really mean it. Being in the mood for a nude lip, I tried on Mocha (a rich chocolate brown) then put a little Peach Glaze (nude peach) in the center. The application was so easy. There was a glide on the lips like a gloss, but not the shine of a gloss. I didn't need a liner (although with some colors like the reds a liner will be necessary), and the colors looked gorgeous on me. At the end of my day, the color was still present. This is something for the gloss girls that don't like lipstick and for the lipstick girls that don't like gloss. I literally feel like I stumbled upon a gold mine!!

I Love New York ????

I don't know if you guys caught it last night, but damn it I can already tell that my Sunday nights will be filled with laughter watching I Love New York season 2. New York AKA Tiffany Patterson and her mother (Sister Patterson) are literally like two train wrecks that I just cannot turn away from. The boob job, the horrible weave (Sister Patterson's has improved to conceal that ginormous forehead), the corny guys, the hooker-like clothing and most importantly the disatrous make-up will all keep me tuned in.

I think New York is a prime example of how we don't want our make up to look (well except for maybe on Halloween). Honestly, it is only the eyeshadow and false lashes. They just over power the rest of her. I can barely see her beautiful brown contacts underneath all of it. I would really like to know who makes the final decision on the makeup- her or the makeup artist? I hope that it's her, because I'd hate to think that there is an artist out there putting lashes on someone that are ten times too large for their eyes. I can't say that everything is bad, because her look is gradually becoming softer (well compared to Season 1). The yeast infection tight clothing, bad weave, and teal-blue eyeshadow are just too much worn in combination all at the same time. Maybe if she just wore one element at a time...?

Ok...Hold your glasses up!! Here's to a... it was so funny that "I watched the re-run episode later in the week" season of I Love New York 2. I really cannot help it. I love reality TV. Besides Better Batter Maggie Moo's icecream, it is one of my guiltiest pleasures.

Saturday is the annual AIDS walk/run for the DC metro area. Don't worry if you have a prior engagement, but there is a way that you can help women and children affected or infected by HIV/AIDS by participating in the MAC AIDS fund. Since 1994, the MAC AIDS fund has been in existence and has donated $95 million to the fund. There are currently 6 gorgeous shades of lipsticks with variable textures and 2 glosses that support this fund. So even if you don't wear lipstick there are 2 glosses that are beautiful as well!! There is noooo excuse. Both the gloss and lipstick sell for only $14. Beauty Bargains

The best feeling in the world is leaving the home of all that is wonderful, "niffty", and most importantly CHEAP with a bag full of new beauty products!!! AKA Target!! I can remain in Target in the beauty section for literally hours !!! In fact, I look forward to going to Target after a long week of mental anguish to relax and update myself on new and old products that I may have overlooked on my last trip. I prefer to go alone, because no one seems to understand my fascination with the store. Most of my friends prefer Wal-Mart (Wallyworld).....but my loyalty stands to my beloved Target.

Target's beauty aisle is filled with all my favorite brands from Iman to L'oreal HIP. So today I will post about my favorite finds at Target !!!

1. L'oreal HIP foundations.

I love these!!! They are perfect for the gal with golden or cinnamon undertones. The coverage is medium and they match perfectly! At a price of $14...its worth a try.

2. L'oreal HIP Eyeshadows, gloss, and cream blush

The eyeshadows have to intensity of a MAC shadow but half the price for 2 shadows!!! They come with a cute little mirror on the bottom as well. The glosses smell lovely and the color is intense!! The cream blush is so versatile. It can be used as an eyeshadow as well as blush, because the it dries down to a matte finish. Genius!! Be careful, a little goes a long way. Not to mention this brand has genius advertising. I love Kerry Washington and Scarlett.

3. Sonia Kashuk Brush sets

For those of us, whose pockets are a little small to afford MAC or Sephora brushes..these are perfect. This was my first brush set, until I could afford MAC brushes.

4. NYC nail polish

On Friday nights, when I do self-maintainence...I pick these up for only 99 cents!! The color selection is amazing. You can get a conservative color as well as a color to express your wild side.

5. Cetaphil Cleansers
This company has had the same formulation for as long as it has been a company. It is good for oily skin and dry skin. It is gentle and hydrating but will not break the bank.

6. Covergirl Lash Exact Mascara and Maybelline Clear Mascara

I love the bristles on this brush. They look a little scary, but it gets really close to my lash line to really give my lashes that extra boost. I always get asked if I'm wearing falsies.

I love the clear mascara to hold down unruly brows until they can be tamed. Other companies sell their clear mascaras anywhere from $11 to $20. This is only $6!!

7. Caboodles Carry Cases

After you get all this makeup you will need something to hold it in right? I use these cases to carry all my makeup. You can't beat the prices and its pretty big. They come in several sizes, so you can also have something that will fit in your purse.

8. Neutrogena Makeup Removing Wipes

These are good for removing makeup after a long night when you are just too tired to go wash your face. I keep these by my bed at night, just in case. I am usually pretty good about removing the makeup. MAC sells their wipes for $15....these are $5.49!!!

Jazzy...a base is something that will act as a barrier between the oil on your eyelids and your eyeshadow. This will give your eyeshadow something to adhere to, thereby making the color more intense (the way it looks in the case) and increase the longevity of the shadow. Most people don't base their shadow and by the end of the day its gone or has creased!! A base will eliminate this problem. If you have dry eyelids then try using a concealer as a base (a small thin layer will be enough) or MAC paint pots or MAC paints. Be sure to apply in a nice even layer. Old Friends, New Habits

Good Morning.

I hope everyone had a lovely weekend. Mine was good. I bumped into an old friend of mine that I haven't spent time with since sophomore year (you know we speak and keep it cordial...but doing real friend stuff...no). Purely by accident we ended up going to a beauty event that you could purchase beauty products for dirt cheap prices( by invite only). I'm talking MAC shadows, gloss, eyeliners, and foundations no more than $3!! After we finished there, I still wasn't satisfied with my new fix of product purchases, so then we went to Target. I finally got to see the new felt tip eyeliner developed by Pat Mcgrath before she left Proctor and Gamble.

Ok, so I am swimming this morning as usual...and someone stops me and tells me that my form is incorrect because I am bending my legs. For as long as I have been swimming, I never knew that when you swim, you use a scissor-like motion. I always flapped my feet and bent my legs. WHO KNEW??!?! I proceeded to try to correct this and ladies.....it was so hard. I was flapping and flopping like someone who didn't know how to swim!! So embarrassing!! I didn't give up, and needless to say I still have some improvement to do....lol. This ties into how we form bad beauty habits, like using a black liner around the mouth and filling in with red lipstick ( I must admit that I was a victim of this in 7th grade...I even took a school picture like this). Or taking your finger and applying eyeshadow without a base.

This is merely to say, if you are unhappy with the results of your beauty routine...take a step back and watch exactly what you are doing. If your eyeshadow is creasing at the end of the day, use a base. Eye liner smearing, when you apply to your waterline...use a powder to set it. Just like someone was watching me swim today, someone is always watching you. Someone else can see what you do not, so getting someone that you trust to tell you the truth (not a friend, because they can lie to spare feelings) could be of benefit. Everyone wants to look and feel their best all the time, so just take a moment to make sure that you are doing everything you need to in order to accomplish this.

Hey Batter! Batter! Batter!!!

Good Evening!! Today has been an up and down day for me....But after speaking with a friend, I feel better. I am also an outdoorsy type of gal, so the nice day also helped to ease my mood.

Lately, I have been noticing that the recent beauty craze is lashes!! Everyone is doing it..lol. Celebrities and normal people alike. I have seen some horrible lash jobs though!!! Some just look like they have literally glued the lashes together and then put them on. I have also seen lashes that just were too overwhelming for a person's face. I recently did a consultation with a bride ( I don't like doing weddings, but she did not seem like she would be a bride-zilla) and her lashes were a little on the sparse and short side. Since it was her wedding day, I did not want to do anything that would take away from her face too much, so I decided on something that would make them look more voluminous and lengthen. MAC #32 eyelashes (shown left) were excellent for the task! I love them!! They look so natural. I love lashes in when doing editorials to just completely take the look up to another level. Can you imagine how different the mod era would look if Twiggy's makeup artist hadn't incorporated those false lashes into the look?

Lashes are that extra piece of jewelry to add just before you leave to polish off your look. Whenever I wear them, I always bat my lashes like a girl at a night club trying to signal the guy sitting across from her to buy her a "drank." I feel sooooo glamorous....so Hollywood!!! Shu-Uemura also makes a synthetic version of the famous mink lashes (the ones that are like $400....J.Lo wears them) for only $20 (shown left).

When applying your lashes and most important accessory, apply a small amount of lash glue to the strip (directly from the tube or squeeze glue on a Q-tip), not the lashes. Let the glue get tacky (count to 10), then look down, place lashes as close to your lash line as possible, finish off with gel or liquid liner to cover glue, and VOILA....you have beautiful eyes!! It is really that simple ladies!! If you don't feel confident in your abilities just get a friend to help. Erykah Badu is going to be performing at LOVE tomorrow night. It's Hump Day Wednesday!!!

As I walk around today, I can't help but notice how beautiful the weather is. There is a nice gentle breeze and just the right amount of sun. I can walk around looking pretty as ever without really breaking a sweat. Perfect time to really show off a little skin and pretty makeup!!

I wish it would remain at this temperature year round. When I go into the stores, I see nothing that says, "nice weater". All the swimsuits have been placed on the sale racks, and replaced by knit sweaters, scarves, and knee-length boots. I am constantly reminded that winter is coming. So...if you want to keep that nice tan that you got while vactioning in Florida or Martha's (or just walking around in the hot sun..like me..lol), here are a couple of tips and products that will help you keep that "I just got back from St. Tropez" look.

The perfect glow starts with the body. If you look above at J-lo and Beyonce, they are glowing from their heads to their toes. They don't only look bronze on their faces. It is a whole body experience. Jergens natural glow moisturizer helps to build a natural glow that looks like its coming from within. It comes in three different shades so everyone can take advantage of this product. It's is responsible for Kelly Ripa's glow. Two years ago, she announced that she had been using this product and women went crazy!! And the best part is that it is only $7 bucks at Target!! Just make sure that you exfoliate your skin before applying. By exfoliating, I mean to gently slough off the dead skin cells by using a body exfoliator.

Once the body has been taken care of, then proceed to the face. Facial Bronzers give you a sunkissed glow. You want to apply with a full brush to the areas that the sun naturally hits-hairline, cheeks, chin, bridge of nose.
Make sure that when choosing a bronzer, you match it to your undertone. The key here is a natural bronze look. Not Donatella...

If you have a fair complexion (Nicole Kidman and Anne Hathaway), look for products that have a peachy/pinky undertone. Guerlain has excellent bronzers that meet this criteria. Using bronzers that are took dark, just will make you look like you have been playing in the mud. But if you have a milky complexion...don't try to work against that too much. Try Bobbi Brown's ShimmerBrick in Beige and Apricot.

Medium complexions (Jennifer Lopez, Kimora Lee Simmons, Lucy Liu)

Try bronzers that have golden undertones. I love Iman's bronzer!! It has a nice shimmer to it and just looks golden on the skin!! Plus, its only like $10 bucks at Target!!! Using a bronzer with a cinnamon undertone will make you look red and sunburned. The object is to look like a perfectly baked, golden brown piece of toast...lol. Laura Mercier has a nice bronzing stick. Try Bobbi Brown's Shimmer brick in Bronze(these shimmer bricks are soooo beautiful).

Darker Complexions (Alek, Angela Basset, Regina King, Oprah, Gabriel Union)

You can use bronzers with either a golden undertone or a cinnamon undertone. Just try them out to see which one works best. Bobbi Brown has a nice matte (no shimmer) bronzer in deep dark, Iman, and MAC has nice irridescent loose powder in Golden Bronze(use sparingly..and apply in natural light..lol), which works excellent as a highlighter. NARS also has a nice bronzer called PALM Beach in the multiple.

If you are really feeling confident about your application, then try Guerlain's Aerosol bronzer(ideal for fair and medium complexions). It comes in a cute spray can. Hold it about an arm's length out and spray in circular motions. Step back and evaluate your work. The application should be evenly distributed.

Bronzer, if applied correctly, can also replace the need for foundation. It alone can even out skin. MAC makes these wonderful Mineralize Skinfinish (shown left) products that gives an excellent glow(they are baked in Italy). If you have fair skin try the one in Medium. If you have Medium skin, try Medium Dark or Dark...etc. Just make sure that your skin is properly hydrated and moisturized!! I wore this product last year(completely unaware of its properties), and my friend told me that I looked like I was glowing!!! Needless to say that I will be wearing this product when the temperature drops!!

Happy Monday!!!

My weekend was very relaxed and fulfilling. I went to Sephora to see if they had anything new, then went off to show my friend how to tweeze and shape her brows. I headed over with my bag filled with Tweerman tweezers (the kind with the sharp, pointed tip), concealer, brow pencil, MAC 266 angled brush, small scissors, brow gel, alcohol, hydrocortisone cream and clean mascara wands. The look on her face was hilarious, when I knocked on her door and she saw how many tools that I had. I had come prepared to do brow reconstructive surgery!! LOL!! Paying someone else to wax your brows isn't always necessary. I learned this when the wax left me looking like I was experiencing puberty for a second time...and my brows were way too thin!! And I was out of twenty dollars!

The first thing to do when preparing to tweeze your brows is to evaluate the shape of your brows and what you would like them to look like. If you naturally have very thin brow work with that shape. The same applies if you have naturally full brows. Thin over tweezed brows are not complementary to every face shape. You want your brows frame your face and bring out your eyes.

Next brush your brows upward and trim any hairs that extend above the brow bone (the bone that your brows sit on). Then brush your brows upward and outward. If you have a curly hair texture, your brows maybe this way as well, so use a little brow gel to hold them in place (Maybelline makes an excellent brow gel for only 5 bucks!!). With your concealer, trace out the desired shape of your new brow(make sure to trace underneath the brow..called the underscore of the brow). MAC has these convenient little concealer sticks that look like chunky pencils. I love these!! Remove all the hair that the concealer is on. It may be easier to locate the hairs that need to be removed, if you use a concealer that is one to two shades lighter than your foundation. Once all the hairs have been removed, remove the concealer and evaluate your new shape. If there are any gaps, grab an angled brush and fill in. Please whatever you do.....DONT USE BLACK!!!! Ewww.....Elvira is not the intended look. If you have blonde hair try a very light brown or cement colored shadow or brow pencil, if you are a red-head try a camel colored shadow, brunettes try a dark brown. African American women with darker skin tones, should try a deep brown like espresso. I will list my favorites for each below. I have posted a before and after picture of Kevyn Aucoin's sister after he tweezed her brows....this is the G rated version....lol. There are also little illustrations to help guide you.

I hope you can see the difference. Removing the excess hairs created more space between her eye and brow, which opened her eyes up.

1. Evalaute the shape of your brows. Hold a pencil vertically next to your nose so that you can see where your brows should begin. Next move the pencil to in about a 35 degree angle to see where they should peak (or where you arch should be. Finally extend the pencil another 20 degrees to see where they should taper off.

2. If you have hair that extends past where the pencil starts, tweeze them. When tweezing, grab the hair at the root and quickly remove it in the direction that the hairs grow. When filling in the brow, make sure to use short hair-like strokes to get the most natural looking brow. Once your finish, your brows should look nice and uniform. Don't worry if you don't get it right on the first try...Rome wasn't built in a day. Keep practiciing!! If you really need a little more help visit your local beauty counter and get someone to help you. Or get your brows waxed and shaped, then just maintain them by tweezing the hairs that grow in.

Happy Thursday Everyone!!!

Don't you just love the feeling after a good workout? You look good and feel great. I love it when I look in the mirror afterwards, and I have this cute little glow on my cheeks. There is a way to look like this always with a little hint of blush added to the apple of the cheek. Just smile and take a blush brush and pop it on. It literally takes 5 seconds. Blush is a way to give your skin a quick little glow and uplift. Just take a look at Kiya(right). She looks like she just stepped off a trendmill in a pretty, polished sort of way. I posted these photos up just so you can see, when applied correctly the difference blush can make.

I have seen women walking around with red faces from blush being applied incorrectly. Blush should be applied on the apple of the cheek. To find the apple of your cheek, just smile and the protruding area is your apple. Once you locate your apple, take the blush brush and lightly dip it into the blush. Next, starting at the apple apply the blush in a backward (toward your hairline), downward motion. This will ensure that your blush looks the most natural. My favorite formulation of blush is cream blush. Most women look at the consistency of cream blush and cringe. It looks goopy!!! Cream blush is the most natural looking blush. It gives a glow that seems to come from within and can double as lipcolor. It works wonders on dry skin, but can be used on oily girls too (especially in the winter when oily girls seem to get a bit drier). Apply cream blush with fingers or a brush in the same manner as powder blush, just be sure to work the product into the skin. The result should be a glow that seems to come from the inside!! Above is a picture of Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge in Velvet Plum (this color looks lovely on darker skin tones) and Cargo Powder blush in Coral Beach (this imparts a pretty peachy glow). L'oreal HIP also makes an excellent cream blush that dries down to a powdery finish in a variety of colors that won't break the bank. Check your local drugstore or Target.

Color selection is based solely on personal preference. I believe almost anyone can wear any color. It just depends on application. If you want to wear NARS Exhibit A (which I do from time to time), go ahead!!! Just make sure you use a blush brush (not the brush that comes in the packaging...invest in a brush blush) to lightly apply until the desired color is obtained. Don't be afraid to try a color on if it looks to bright in the packaging. It is important to remember that once the product goes on, it will go on diffused and will not look nearly as bright on you. Never judge a Blush by its color. Sometimes when I am in the market for a new blush and I want a little help picking one out, I will ask the beauty advisor. I do not like it when the first thing they pick up is a color in the plum family. As a woman of color with darker skin, we always get thrown into the plum box. They look wonderful on, but don't be afraid to try bright colors as well. The only exception to this rule is if you want to cover redness on the cheek area. To apply a red toned or pinky blush would just make the redness more obvious. Instead opt for a bronzer. Blush goes on smoother, more intense, and last longer if there is some type of foundation, tinted moisturizer, or primer applied underneath. Well, tomorrow is Friday and that means I will be spending a couple of hours in Sephora and at various beauty counters testing new products. I can't wait!!!

My Lipgloss is Poppin'!!!

Swimming three times a week can really take a toll on the beauty regimen...Normally, after getting out of the pool, I slather on my Bobbi moisturizer, a little tinted moisturizer, and gloss. I'm not speaking of the overly shiny, I just ate a bucket of Popeyes gloss, but you know.....like I just licked my lips a little. They glisten.

This post is dedicated to all the gloss gals. In speaking to a few my friends, I have come to realize that their main beauty staple is gloss. Especially one particular friend, who no matter how many times we go to Target together, she always leaves with the same caramel colored gloss. To see the smile on her face, one would think that she just got the new Billy B. brush set...LOL. I can always predict which gloss she will choose....the brown one. It boggles my mind how we get so set in our beauty routine, that we actually go out to purchase a million different brands of glosses all in the same color family. I love gloss....in fact it was my first obsession with makeup. Every friday when I got my allowance, I would go to the Big Bee drugstore and get a new lipgloss. I especially used to love the push up kind that covergirl came out with. Never in the same color though!! I always tried to diversify my lipgloss collection.

Gloss is a great way to try a red, bright pink, or a coral that you thought you might be too dark or light for(I hate those sayings). My favorite red gloss is the MAC lustreglass in Venetian. It gives you a hint of color...just enough so you can imagine what you would look like if you had the lipstick on. Plus it still give you the shine of a gloss. I pair it with Currant/deep red liner...I look so nice and 50's but with a modern glossy finish!! I usually reserve the red lip for special occasions, like the Red Carpet, Dates, etc. Now on a day that I'm feeling girlie, I love hot pinks!!! Makeup Forever has this nice hot pink in Candy Rose that gives medium color payoff, but not overwhelming. I love hot pinks and coral in the summertime!! It's goes with the weather. I swear Christian Dior has the longest lasting gloss that I have ever tried!! I can go for hours and not touch up!

Gloss is an excellent way for you to step a couple of feet outside of your comfort zone when it comes to color. Never go by how the gloss looks inside the tube. Once it goes on your lips the color becomes more diffused. Using a darker or lighter liner will also change the color. I almost always mix atleast two different colors to get that perfect color. So...don't limit yourself when it comes to picking formulations or colors...and always remember to exfoliate lips before applying gloss. Try to have a variety of colors!!!! Play around and have fun!! The Drug store is always a good place to start. Loreal HIP and Revlon make awesome gloss for only $7.

I know, I know....I am out doing myself today with two posts, but I just had to. This couldn't wait until Wednesday. Walking around DC today, I could not help but spot women sporting some horrible makeup.

Ladies, here are a couple of things to consider when deciding what makeup to wear.

1. YOUR EYESHADOW DOES NOT HAVE TO MATCH YOUR CLOTHES or YOUR LIPSTICK!!! I can't tell you how many times I have seen this today alone. Makeup is about coordinating with your clothing but not matching. If you have on a purple shirt, it is ok to wear a gold or muted green shadow. Imagine seeing someone with a green shirt, green eyeshadow, and green shoes and acessories......

2. Extreme Brow highlights are outdated. I think I see this more from people who are MAC victims. It is ok to have a brow highlight, because naturally there is a highlight there. BUT if you are a chocolate gal walking around with NW25 under the brow.....please find the nearest bottle of makeup remover. Makeup is about expression...but lets be progressive and modern.

3. TWO Toned lips.....ewww!!!! Kevyn Aucoin made this trend hot back in the day with Mary J, but folks that was back in the 90's. Lets fast forward to the present. Please blend the liner in with your lipstick. Your lips will still have definition. It is about a natural transition of color. Chestnut liner with C-thru gloss, Nightmoth with explicit gloss.....no!!!

4. Brows that are 5 shades to dark or tattoed on!!! NO!!!!! Unless you are a blonde please do not apply. Your brow color should match your hair color. No one should be able to tell that you fill your brows in. It should look like you were born that way.

5. Ungroomed brows....the age of catepillars on the face are gone. Full brows are in...but they are still groomed. Just lightly tweeze the hairs that need it. The Brooke Shields trend is still relevant, but even her brows were groomed.

6. Black liner is not everyday!!! I love the Cleopatra/Elizabeth Taylor look. Love IT!!! But not for class everyday, not for work, speaking with clients with your eyes looking like a racoon is not cute. Brown liner is softer. And please do not only line the bottom.

7. Overly powdered skin. Women are walking around here looking like they have literally packed 5 layers of studio fix on!!! Real skin is not overly matte or powdery looking.

Step away from the sponge. Invest in a powder brush.

Ladies...don't let me see you on the street. I'm watching!! You have been warned!!!

Paint the Town Red!!!!

I hope everyone had a lovely weekend. I sure did!!! The Runway Africa show was on fire!!! The makeup was on point, the models were stunning, and the designers just put the icing on the cake. The makeup followed trend. Fresh, nude, pretty faces, and of course the always sexy smokey eye with a bold lip. The last scene was very tribal. The models came out with tribal markings. It was incredible!! Don't worry if you missed it....I will be posting pictures on Wednesday. By the end of the show, I wanted to scream at the top of my lungs...."I AM AFRICAN!!!"

I got a chance to sneak backstage to observe the products that the makeup artists were using to achieve such natural looks. What did I see? The new MAC paint pots in bare study, bronze and gold shadows, strobe cream to give the skin a nice radiant glow, and MAC studio mists foundation to even out skin, but still leaving it dewy. No one was using powder!!! The makeup artist explained that the object was to keep the skin looking "fresh, like real skin."

This brings me to the next topic of discussion....eye shadow base.

How many times have you spent an extra 20 minutes doing dramtic eye shadow only to find that by the end of the day, the shadow has done a hoodini or creased ? Go ahead...it's ok to raise your hand. I see it all to often. This is happening, because the oil on your eyelids have practically broken down your eyeshadow and caused it to crease. To eliminate this use a base. A base will act as a barrier against the oil. New technology in cream shadows make them an excellent choice to use as a base. Cream shadows are now long wearing and crease free!!! My favorites are the MAC paints, MAC paint pot (arrived on counter August), Bobbi Brown Cream shadow, and NARS Cream shadow. They come in a variety of colors. Using a base will also help you get a more intense color payoff. If you want to use a Jewel Blue eyeshadow, use a Jewel Blue base to get a long wearing, non-creasing, intense Jewel Blue color on your lids. Some artist like to use concealers as an eyeshadow base. I like this method only if I know the shadow will be on for a short period of time or if the person has dry eyelids. Using concealer underneath as a base for someone with oily eyelids is asking for trouble!! Chances are you have double the amount of oil on your eyelids than on your face. Concealer already contains some type of emollient, which is like adding fuel to an already burning fire. New cream shadows go on "wet" but dry down, so work fast! Apply a thin layer, because if applied to thick it can look clumpy. On those days, when you have to be to work at 8AM and you wake up at 7:30, cream shadows can be worn alone, with the quick stroke of your index finger. I love the Bobbi Brown cream shadows in Burnished, Suede, and Aqua. I also love the MAC paints (in the squeeze tube) in Graphito (perfect base for a smokey eye), Architecture, and Bamboo. NARS won the InStyle award for "Best Cream Shadow." For you gals who live out in areas where there aren't any MAC, Bobbi, Sephora, or Christian Dior counters....you can always go online.

Tools of The Trade

Good Morning Class....

Yesterday, we spoke about foundations and concealers. Today we will be learning about the tools or brushes to apply them. Why use brushes you ask? Simple....Brushes apply less product, waste less product, apply products with more precision, and prevent the tranfer of bacteria from your hands to your face.

However, it is very important that you clean your brushes (that you have invested so much of your hard earned cash into) atleast three times a week. This can be done by using a mild baby shampoo and spraying sparingly with alcohol. Once they are clean, reshape the brush and leave to dry off a counter top. Doing this will keep your brushes in tip top shape!!!

There are sooooooo many different brushes out there on the market!!!! I even feel overwhelmed typing this. Billy B.(MAC senior artist) has a line of brushes, Jay Manual, Bobbi Brown, MAC, Lancome, Prescriptives, Sephora, Mally Roncal.......so your brand of brushes are limitless just make sure that the quality is there.

We are going to keep it restricted to foundation and concealer brushes today. There are two classes of brushes to apply foundation. There are flat synthetic brushes (artificial fibers) and natural hair brushes (usually made from animal hair...trimmed animal hair). Natural hair brushes tend to absorb the product and synthetic brushes pick the product up on the tip. The type of brush you should use with your foundation and concealer depends on what you are trying to accomplish. Below I have listed a couple of things to think about along with some of the brushes I like to use. Take Notes!!

1. If I am using an emollient product like a foundation stick, cream to powder, etc. I like to "buff" the product into the skin. By "buff," I mean making the foundation appear to be the person's own skin by using buffing motions(like when you buff wax onto a car). I never like to look like I am wearing foundation. The illusion of natural beauty is what I strive for. This is best acheived by using a natural hair brush or a brush that has a dome like tip. I prefer MAC brush in #192 and #109. However, there are brands that have flat synthetic concealer brushes for concealers.

2.Powdered products are better applied with full brushes or velour puffs. You want to use a brush that is full, because they apply the products softly and not just in one place. I generally have a kleenex handy to shake the excess powder off before applying to the face. I love the Bobbi Brown powder brush (it has a tapered tip).

3. Flat synthetic brushes are good for liquid products. Why? Liquids tend to sink down into natural fiber brushes, whereas with a synthetic brush the products remain on the tip. I love MAC #109, MAC #191, and MAC #188 (not flat, but has a flat head...good for buffing).

The point here is to take into account the shape of the brush and the materials used to make it. This will help you to determine what it will be best used as. For the beginner, it is best to just invest in a brush set. During this time of the year, Sephora is probably the best place. MAC has brush set during the holiday season and Nordstrom has them during their anniversary sale, which makes a perfect gift to yourself, of course. Now that we have covered the basics, I will not be giving out anymore "get out of jail free" cards for those of you that I see walking around with foundation lines.

Back to The Basics

Whew!!! I am exhausted. Trying to reshape your body after just relying on your metabolism to keep the weight off is kicking my butt. Instead of hitting the treadmill like most, I am opting for a low impact workout-swimming. This brings me to my next topic of discussion. It is a topic of mystery for most, leaving most women looking like they have floating heads or someone just painted their faces on. Get where this discussion is headed....? That's right foundation and concealer!!!! Many women are dead set against wearing it, because they are afraid of it. They don't know which shade is best, which formulation is best, and for some reason we feel that it makes us seem vain and artificial for wearing it. Foundation does not compromise your beauty. It enhances it. I am a BIG fan of the natural look (in fact, that is what I am known for), but I have seen some women walk around, and they would look so much better with a little concealer under the eye and foundation in certain areas.

Now here is the age old question....What is the difference between foundation and concealer?

The only difference between foundation and concealer is the concentration of pigment in the product. There is more pigment in concealer than in foundation. Foundations and concealers come in a variety of forms (i.e. liquids, powders, cream to powder, moisturizing, stick, cake, etc.). They also come in a variety of finishes. By finishes, I mean the final texture of the product once it dries down onto the skin (natural matte, satin matte, dewy, natural, radiant glow, pearlized, etc.).

For beauty makeup or day-to-day wear, the biggest mistake women make is applying foundation all over the face. This is a no-no!!! It will look like you have a floating head and too much foudation on. This will totally defeat the purpose of foundation, which is intended to make you look like you have beautiful, even, and healthy skin. The rule of thumb with foundation is to "Apply As Needed." I find that the most discolored areas are the cheeks, forehead, and undereye area. If you must apply all over, make sure that you blend the product past the jawline, so that there are not any demarcation lines. Also, the match. There is no reason (unless you are an actor or performer of some sort) should your foundation be five shades lighter. Trust me ladies....It looks HORRIBLE!! Be sure to purchase the correct shade of foundation, which is why I suggest making an investment by visiting your local department store. Unless you are an expert, don't pick up something out of the Target beauty aisle without testing it out in natural sunlight. In order for it to match perfectly, the foundation needs to have the correct undertone. In today's day and time, finding the right foundation should be a breeze. Many women of color have this problem...but with the right makeup artist (i.e. Myself) this should be a simple process. Below I have listed the pros and cons of a few different formulations of foundations.

1. Tinted Moisturizer-TM

This is a lighter version of foundation that is composed of more moisturizers than pigment. It provides a sheer coverage and imparts a radiant finish. Most even come with spf of atleast 15. I would recommend this IF you have pretty even skin. Some of my favorites are Becca Tinted Moisturizer, MAC, Laura Mercier, and Bobbi Brown Tinted Moisture Balm.

2. Liquid Foundation

No need to be afraid!!! This is one of my favorites. It is the next level up from tinted moisturizers. There are several different finishes when it comes to liquid foundation-matte, natural matte, dewy, etc. They come with atleast an spf of 15 and there are also moisturizing formulations for those with drier skin. The coverage is sheer to medium. To build this one up to a medium coverage, let the first layer dry then apply another. The only thing with liquid foundation is that once it dries onto the skin, the color darkens just a tad (not enough to notice).

My favorites are L'oreal HIP (works well on women of color), MAC studio fix fluid (matte finish), Armani, Makeup Forever, MAC Face and Body (very sheer coverage), and Bobbi Brown (oil free and moisturizing).

3. Cream to Powder

Most cream to powders come in that convient compact packaging with the cute little sponge underneath. Now as I have seen, many women use the sponge incorrectly. I am just down right against using sponges over and over. Why ? They breed bacteria. Think about it....the sponge goes from the compact to your face (which has bacteria), then back into your product, then back onto your face.....EWWW. Then, you get a lovely little visitor two weeks later right on the center of your forehead. Cream to powder foundation goes on as a creamy formula and VOILA!! It dries down to a matte finish. Ideal for the oily gal. The coverage is medium to full. I really only recommend a matte finish if you are extremely oily. I do not like the matte look, because real skin does not look overly matte. If you get oily throughout the day invest in oil blotting paper.

I don't really have any favorites in this category, but Bobbi Brown is introducing her new moisturizing compacts next week. MAC also makes a moistureblend foundation(sheer medium coverage).

4. Powder

This is probably my least favorite, because it isn't used correctly by the masses of women. Like the cream to powder foundations, it comes with a lovely little sponge for women to pack on the product. I can always tell when a women is wearing a powder foundation(i.e. MAC studio Fix), because it looks cakey and powdery. Powdered foundations give a matte finish. It has a medium to full coverage. This product is ideal for the oily gal. Before using this product make sure to moisturize and let your moisturizer sink in. If not, the product will become hard. But this is a BIG "no-no" if you have dry skin. It only serves to make you look drier. I know the packaging is convenient, but moisturing cream in compacts are readily available. Translucent powder is totally different than powdered foundations. Translucent powder "sets" your makeup (by set..think of it like saving your work). It ensures that you will not have to do very many touch ups throughout the day and absorbs excess oil. You only need to "powder" certain areas (under eye area to prevent concealer from creasing, forehead, and a little on the sides of the nose). If you have drier skin, very minimal powdering is necessary. The pigment concentration is minimal, so there isn't much coverage.

5. Cake and/or Stick Foundations

These are full coverage foundations that are very emollient. They glide over the skin effortlessly when "warmed up" (not in the microwave...but on the back of your hand). They provide a natural finish and is ideal for the gal that does not have skin like Beyonce. These can tend to feel heavier IF applied incorrectly. To thin out the product for a lighter feel, apply with a damp sponge or buffing brush. This is good for all skin types.

I love Bobbi Brown foundation stick, MAC studio Stick, Black Opal, and Laura Mercier.

6. Aerosol/Airbrush Foundation

This is a sheer to medium coverage foundation that must be sprayed on a secondary surface( a square of aluminum foil, petri dish, etc.). Do not spray this directly on the face. It has micronized mother of pearl particles that act as optical diffusers to soften fine lines, even complexion, and give an airbrushed finish. This is another one of my favorites, especially when working with models who have lovely skin. Aerosol foundations have buildable coverage. Apply one layer then apply another. They also come in bronzers as well. No powdering is necessary after this, unless that is the look you want to acheive.

My top picks are Christian Dior Airflash (excellent coverage, but only comes in lighter shades), Guerlain, and MAC studio mist.

Concealers come in the same formulations as foundations and give similar finish. Using concealer is encouraged only if you have dark circles to cover or an area that your foundation just isn't quite doing the job. For undereye concealer, I would recommend a color that is one to two shades lighter than your foundation. This is because you want highlight your undereye area and bring forth your eyes. Some cosmetic companies automatically adjust the corresponding concealer colors to a lighter one. It takes out the guess work. Please make sure to blend the foundation and concealer so that there are no lines. I find the most effective application is next to a window. Natural light highlights flaws, making it easy to identify where more blending is necessary. Now this is not to say that concealer can't be used as foundation and vice versa. Sometimes if I would like sheer coverage I use a sheer concealer under my eyes, cheeks and forehead.

Last but not least, who came first...the chicken or the egg???? Which comes first? Foundation or concealer? This is an age old debate. I adjust this technique accordingly. If I am doing a lighter concealer under the eye and I want to blend the two together, then I place the slighter darker foundation on top of the outer edges of the concealer. The effect is a natural transition of color. This is what I would suggest for you-adjust accordingly. Play around and see which technique works best for you.

Good Morning ALL!!!

This morning, I had to be somewhere at 8AM. I woke up at 7:15 in a frenzy. I had no time to play around with newly purchased eyeshadows and blush from Makeup Forever (although with weather like this, today would have been perfect). So I made a mad dash to the bathroom and showered. But all my joy had not been lost in this uproar. I am a skincare fanatic. See, I believe that good skincare is the foundation of your foundation. Think about it....We use concealer and foundation to give the illusion of having perfect skin. So anyway, when I cleansed my skin with Bobbi Brown Lathering Tube Soap followed by the Hydrating Face Cream (Bobbi Brown Cosmetics :: Hydrate), I looked in the mirror and smiled because my skin felt nice, supple, and hydrated. I don't mean to toot my own horn but TOOT!!! TOOT!! My skin looked damn good, despite not having the pleasure of doing my daily routine of foundation, concealer, eyeshadow, eyeliner, etc. This made me want to thank my grandma and fairy beauty mother for instilling good skincare pratices in my 20s.

So....What is the moral of this story??? Good skincare is important. Invest in products that will properly cleanse, hydrate, and nourish your skin, so foundation and concealer will be options, not necessities. I have listed a few misconceptions that most women have when it comes to skincare:

1. Oily Skin does not need moisturizer.

Most women that I encounter seem to feel that if their skin is oily, there is no need to moisturize. Wrong! Skin can be oily on the surface but dehydrated underneath. If you smoke stop! Drink lots of water and moisturize.

2. Oily Skin should be cleansed with harsh cleansers to remove all traces of oil.

Washing your skin more than twice daily to remove sebum does more harm than good. It only serves to stimulate oily skin to produce more sebum to compensate for the loss. Use a cleanser that will not leave your skin feeling dry and tight afterwards. I find that cetaphil makes an excellent gentle cleanser for oily skin for only $7.

3. The Needs of Skin remains the Same.

This is one of the biggiest misconceptions. My skincare regime changes with the weather. In the summer, I would consider myself a normal to oily gal, so I use a moisturizer that is lighter in weight, but still hydrating. Conversely, in the winter, I am more normal to dry. I use a moisturizer that is heavier. I prefer to use balms and serums in the winter to protect my skin from the wind damage. Most women will find that as they get older their skin will change as well. This is why it is essential to have an arsenal of skincare products, so that on days that your skin feels drier you can make the necessary adjustments.

4. Oily skin must avoid oil containing products.

Acneic skin should avoid oil containing products. That is, skin that is prone to breakouts. Not oily skin. Every other day I use Clarins Face Oil (it is the summer in DC) followed by Bobbi Brown Hydrating Face Cream. Only if you are prone to serious breakouts should you avoid these products.

5. Good Skincare consist of using the same moisturizer that you use on your face.

I cringe as I write this one.Partly because I used to be a victim of this last one, before my fairy beauty mother took me under her wing down the aisle of the cosmetics department of Nordstrom. I saw no difference between using Vaseline Intensive Care and some over priced department store moisturizer. In fact, I really did not know that such a thing was in existence. My grandmother taught me to moisturize, but it was to the extent of using Vegetable Oil on my face during the cold months. I quickly noticed the difference upon using the products. My skin no longer felt tight. Needless to say...Now I NEVER use body moisturizers on my face.

Ok...I think we have it. So Let's repeat this together...Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize!!!!
